Kate Austen relaxed back into the luxurious bucket seat in the old car and switched on the radio. "Nothing Left To Lose" by Mat Kearney was playing on the old time 57 Chevy radio, that looked all shiny and chrome-new, as something out of the future than more from the past. The refurbished car's mat roof was down and the wind blowing through their hair. Sawyer was driving and turned to Kate, laughing, as they goofed singing with the song. The song didn't fit the car well, but it somehow fit their reckless mood. The sun was bright still, not ready to slip behind the mountains to fall asleep for the night.
They laughed as they sang:
"Come on and we'll sing, like we were
free
Push the pedal down watch the world around fly by us
Come
on and we'll try, one last time
I'm off the floor one more time to
find you
And here we go there's nothing left to choose
And here
we go there's nothing left to lose…"
They looked in each others eyes as the world flew by around them, hazy, like in a dream…
The song started again and they laughed, and sang again:
"Something's in the air tonight
The
sky's alive with a burning light
You can mark my words something's
about to break
And I found myself in a bitter fight
While
I've held your hand through the darkest night
Don't know where
you're coming from but you're coming soon
To a kid from Oregon by way of
California
All of this is more than I've ever known or seen
Come on and we'll sing, like we were
free
Push the pedal down watch the world around fly by us
Come
on and we'll try, one last time
I'm off the floor one more time to
find you
And here we go there's nothing left to choose
And here
we go there's nothing left to lose"
They were making fun of the song, with it's simplistic view, summing up life in it's lyrics, which both now knew nothing was that easy. But their hearts cried inside. Kate looked over at Sawyer, serious now, the song fading away into the night, as she switched off the shiny metal dial on the radio. Chrome gleamed spakling now in the dimming sunlight, as the sun now was falling behind the mountains. The air grew colder around them. Sawyer frowned, and pushed the lever to bring the top back. Kate touched his hand with her fingers gently, and shook her head, "No not yet," her voice was gentle, a bit sad sounding, "I want to feel the air a bit longer." He stopped from raising the roof.
Kate watched Sawyer driving, looking like he hadn't a care in the world, his goofy grin becoming more serious now. She thought about the time she was on the Island talking with Sun, thinking about what happened to Tom, when she returned to see her mother in the hospital, and how he had died. How it had been her fault. Her eyes misted over remembering what she said to Sun, after Sun told her how she imagined when she was a child what falling in love was like and thinking that it would be easy having one man fall in love with you forever.
Kate remembered what she told Sun after that. "Yeah, me too…."
But for Kate, love had never been a dream. Certainly never had worked out like one.
