Redbeard
The sun was beating down so very brightly on the countryside. I stared down at the grave. It wasn't a fancy grave, just some fresh dirt with a large rock to serve as a head stone. It has been a day since he left, but it feels like years. My faithful companion, gone, just like that. A flash of too bright light for the last rays of sunlight, a screech of rubber against concrete, an agonizing yelp of pain, and then defining silence.
The day started out normal enough. Get up, get ready, head to school, be ignored, head home, be greeted by him, head out back to continue the Adventures of Billy and Redbeard as they sail across the globe. That day, we had discovered the lost coat of Mike. I never thought that adventure would be our last. We played until we were called back home for dinner.
I ran over to where his body laid, broken, and cried. Mom ended up finding us there, at the side of the road. I don't really remember what much of happened at that point. My mind was stuck in replay of his cry. I remembered being carried away.
So now here I stand, over the grave of my best friend. The sun relentlessly beating down on us. At least, it started out as us. Mom, Dad, and my brother have already left, leaving me to grieve in peace. All I could think about was that my best friend, Redbeard, was gone. No longer was I able to come home, with him liking my face as I came through the door after a long day at school, and going out back to play. I sit with my back to the grave, looking up to the sun. Even though the day was the hottest of that summer, my body was cold. I looked up at the sun and thought, the sun is actually cold. It's cold and empty and all is lost. Maybe it's better to not love anything at all than to love something and lose it.
Hello.
This was a small story that I wrote for a English project at the end of the year and decided to throw it up here. It's really short because my teacher wanted us to practice writing shorter things so we had to write a story in under a page. It was a huge problem for most of my class. But here was my entry. I also plan on posting more of the things I wrote from prompts in that class. Also, there is a quote from Welcome to Night Vale, I couldn't resist putting it in at the time I wrote it.
Hope you enjoyed.
