Chocolate On The Roof
"I have other plans for this evening."
It wasn't a lie, not really. Robbie's change of plans merely gave her the excuse she'd been looking for to return to the man she'd left on the roof.
She found him in much the same position as before: leaning against the stone balustrade, staring out at the city. Only this time he was bathed in moonlight rather the golden glow of the setting sun.
"I thought you had a girls' night," he said without turning, hearing her approach.
"It got cancelled," she replied, coming to join him, staring out at the city also.
"I'm sorry."
"I'm not," she responded truthfully, he turned to face her, raising an eyebrow.
It was then that she realised she hadn't fooled him with her flimsy excuse of a girls' night. What girl friends did she have to go out with anyway?
"Besides, how could I go out and leave you here to mope?" she teased gently.
He gave her a half smile as he turned back to look out across the city, "I'm not moping...I'm...thinking."
"About the case?"
He nodded.
Jackie chose her words carefully, "This one really got you didn't it? Not so much the murders, but what Strange said about Taggart."
Michael shook his head slightly, deep in thought, "I wanted to believe him, Jackie, I really did think that he would be here forever." He sighed and looked down, "As infuriating as he was, I never imagined what it would be like without him. When he died I didn't know what to do, how I could ever be able to step into his shoes."
Unable to help herself she reached out and squeezed his shoulder, "But you did," she reminded him, she cocked her head to the side, "you're not as infuriating," she told him with a small smile, "but you're just as good as he was, as a cop and as a boss."
He smiled faintly at her, "Thanks."
Sensing that it might be time to lighten the mood, Jackie pulled the bar of chocolate he'd given her earlier in the day out of her handbag. "Fancy some chocolate?" she asked.
Michael gave her an amused look, "You should feel privileged," she continued, "I don't share my chocolate with just anybody you know."
Michael smiled as he accepted the proffered half a chocolate bar, "I feel highly honoured that you're sharing this with me," he told her seriously, laughter dancing in his eyes.
"To Jim Taggart," she said, holding her half a chocolate bar up in a toast.
"To friendship," Michael responded, she gave him a small smile and they 'clinked' their chocolate together.
Michael finished his chocolate before Jackie and shook his head as he realised that she'd hardly eaten any of hers. "What?" she asked when she caught his amused expression, "Chocolate is a very serious thing, Michael, you can't just eat it all at once."
He shook his head, "Of course not."
He turned to leave, offering her his arm as he did so, "Would you care to join me for some dinner?" he asked. "I could take you out somewhere nice, since you're all dressed up, but to tell you the truth I'd rather have some takeaway and a movie."
Jackie smiled as she linked her arm with his, "That's the best idea I've heard all day."
Michael returned her smile and, arm in arm, they left the roof together.
