Guilt
The guilt is overwhelming.
He can feel it every second of the day, as the world crushes around him and the air thickens and it is impossible to breathe, until he has almost convinced himself that he's going to tell her, that they'll work it out and go to counseling and things will get better. Until he almost screams his secrets out at the world, tells them about the cheating and the lying, shows them the dirt just under his skin and the words caught just behind his mouth.
But he manages.
When he goes home to the house that's just a bit too large and too new, boxes still lining the walls from their latest move, (Because they have the money, so why not move? And neither of them mentions their fear of much-too-small cupboards or rooms shared with countless siblings.), he arranges his face into a smile and gives her a kiss that's just a little too stiff, not that she can tell the difference anymore. They talk about nothing, maneuver away from questions where the answer hasn't already been said a million times. The guilt is still there, pressing at his skin, but when he opens his mouth to confess, to cry and beg and plead for her forgiveness, he just tells her that tomorrow he has to stay late at the office, and she nods and turns away.
And when everyone's gone home, and her laugh is too loud in the magical silence of the empty office, it is as if he can no longer feel it. The feeling of her blonde hair brushing against his skin as it falls from its clips and the insanity that lurks behind her silver eyes still surprise him, although it's been far too long, and the guilt somehow slips away until he suddenly tears his eyes away from her lopsided smile, and realizes that it's gone.
When he gets home all the lights are out, the children tucked away, and Ginny long asleep, but somehow he manages a smile, despite the fact that there is no one there to notice if he doesn't. And as he climbs into bed he shoves his hidden thoughts to the bottom of his stomach and tries to forget that it's the wizarding world, and nothing stays secret for long.
