Disclaimer: I don't own LOST. Nor do I own Benjamin Linus – he owns me.
You'll probably find the quotation I took from 'City of Angels' by yourself ;)
She didn't know why she was still on this island.
She knew for sure that it had nothing to do with her work since all her attempts to help those poor pregnant women failed. And she knew that Ben still wouldn't let her go home. But she couldn't explain herself why she never tried to escape. She wasn't a prisoner even though Ben sometimes behaved like she was.
'You're mine.' Those words said it all. At first, she was frightened. Frightened that he thought he had the right to say something like this, like she had no more control of her own life.
She didn't know. Not until that summer evening when she sat down on a bench, watching as the sun slowly disappeared. They had just finished their book club meeting and Ben came to join her. He sat beside her and nobody said a word for what felt like an eternity. To leave the unpleasent silence behind she raised her voice.
'Are you afraid?'
She wasn't sure if she hadn't crossed the line since he was her boss after all.
'Of what?'
She thought of the x rays of his back. Imagining that huge tumor.
'Dying.'
She turned her head and looked at him as she was saying this. Trying to catch his eyes, trying to read him although she was knew he was always better in such kind of things than she was.
'I don't know why I should be.'
Even after the shocking news that he hadn't much time left Ben still remained controlled. She always wondered how he managed it. But suddenly he turned his head, facing her with a look in his eyes she never saw before. It was just a slight emotion, barely recognizable, but still it was there.
'I'm not afraid. When somebody asks me what I liked the best, I'll tell them, it was you.'
With this Ben rose up and left. Walking towards his house while she didn't make an attempt to move or to follow him.
And suddenly she knew.
