Catch Me If You Can

She was always running.

Or that's how it seemed through his eyes.

Almost every time he saw her she'd run. She wasn't afraid of him as most people seemed to believe. On the contrary they were quite close. Well as close as one could get to Uchiha Itachi. It was their game of cat and mouse. Though he never seemed able to catch her. His superior speed always put him at an advantage when sparring, but he just couldn't keep up when she started running like that. She had been with them for three years when he finally asked, "What keeps you going." She knew what he meant but she just laughed and said, "The same thing that keeps us all going," before running off again. Though he loathed to admit it her answer confused him. The search for power kept him going, but he knew that was not true for her and many others in the world. She had once said that being weak had once bothered her but it didn't anymore. He silently disagreed with her on that topic, though he'd never admit to it. And he doubted it had anything to do with the internal working of the human body, that answer was to simple to the cryptic reply he had gotten. At her request he helped improve her taijutsu, which was not as bad as she implied it to be, though her form was bad her endurance probably rivaled his own. What ever force it was that kept her running, also seemed to effect her fighting. He had seen her fight long after another would've given up and accepted that they were to die. Her refusal of death intrigued him, but whenever he was about to ask that was her cue to start running. After the first time he'd never gotten the question out again before she took off. Every trick he used no matter what she'd always run away, like she knew what he was doing. He had only gotten the one answer from her but he couldn't make any sense of it.

But after so many years and so many brushes with death he knew that now would be the last time he would see her, and he just had to ask one more time before he would never speak to her again.

But the answer came before the question, "I run for the sake of running." And for once he understood her purposely cryptic answers. In the shinobi life one runs to escape and that's just what she was doing. He had only a vague idea of what she was running from but it didn't matter he had gotten his answers after seven years of work. "Thank you," and for the only time since those words first crossed his lips he meant it. But she just laughed a pure, genuine, no sarcasm included laugh and said, " That's all you Uchiha's ever seem to say to me." He knew the incident of which she spoke and let a small smile slip through. She smiled herself before whispering her final words.

He now ran in her place thinking of all the different things she had showed him. Things that she had learned in the two years between leaving her village and joining the Akatsuki. But more importantly of what she had taught him, that it was okay to care even just a little. That smile stayed with him and every time he thought of her it would break his normal mask.. Her final words were etched into his mind after hearing them so many times before she would run off again. He'd never forget those words and every time he started running again they would just pop into his mind of their own accord, "Catch me if you can."
