This is my very first Dark Angel fic. I hope you like it! And this is a short little Max/Alec snippet, so Max/Logan fans…stay away. Takes place post-Freak Nation. Oh, and this might not make a whole lot of sense...but I don't care. Lol.

Disclaimer: I don't own Dark Angel, it belongs to Charles H. Eglee and James Cameron.

Enjoy!

Are You Purring?

Alec came to a stop to in front of where Max leaned against the wall. Everyone was arguing about what to do next. They had the world against them, and no solution to that problem. The entire time Max had stood against the wall, silent, one ankle crossed over the other, rubbing at her eyes periodically. There was so much commotion going on in the middle of the room that no one noticed Alec slipping away from the crowd.

"Hey," he said softly. "…are you all right?"

Max looked up, at him, and then shook her head. "Well, no. Not really. These people are my family and I don't know what to do to keep them all from getting shot dead. So, no…I'm not all right, not really."

Alec nodded, then stopped closer and put an arm around her shoulders. "You will be. Promise. Like you said, we're here and we're not going anywhere. The rest of the world is just gonna have to get over it."

"Oh, they will. With guns."

"No, they won't. Not like that. They're our family, Max. We won't let them down. They can't take us down that easy. Look at how much better we are than them! They don't call us 'genetically enhanced' for nothing!"

Max snorted, shaking her head.

"We'll find a way. No one's dying as long as I'm around." It was a statement, and when Alec looked at her, she could see that he meant it, more than anything he'd ever said. "Not you, or any of them."

That, too.

They just stood there a few minutes, detached from the arguments, not really hearing them, detached from the rest of the world. Alec was surprised that Max hadn't pushed his arm away yet, but he wasn't complaining. And sometime during that short time, he'd realized he was feeling…vibration. He hadn't said anything, partly because he didn't want to break whatever…bond he and Max had at the moment, where White and his loons and everyone else in the world didn't existed, especially the ones that wanted their family dead. He also hadn't said anything because he couldn't figure out the source of the vibrating. But then a thought struck him. With all the cat-like tendencies X5's had, would it be so far of a stretch…?

"Are you…purring?"

Max's head snapped up, and she stared at him. "What?"

"Well, I don't think there's an earthquake...hey, are you in heat?"

Max rolled her eyes. "Shut up."

"Well, are you?"

"No!"

"Are you sure? Because you're not usually this friendly with me…"

"Bite me," she snapped.

"Hey, if you're this turned on, why not?"

Max moved forward and locked her lips with his, the heat of the kiss searing. Her hand came up and threaded itself through his hair, and Alec's hands came to rest on her hips and pull her closer. When they broke apart, both panting slightly and faces flushed, Max raised her dark eyes to Alec's green ones, and she was smiling when she said, "I told you to shut up."

"Well, now I know you can take care of that problem successfully," Alec retorted.

Max rolled her eyes and used the hand on the back of Alec's head to pull him back down to kiss him again.
