"Kenshin, where are you going?" she said from the edge of the forest. Kaoru's blue kimono fluttered in the breeze as she stared at the battosai who had stopped dead in his tracks.

"Kaoru," he began as he slowly turned around to look at the young girl. He walked towards her until he was a few feet away from her.

"Please, return to the dojo." His violet eyes flickered.

"Where are you going?" she whispered into the breeze more than at Kenshin. He touched the sheath of his reverse-blade sword and wrapped one arm around Kaoru's waist.

"I am a wanderer, Miss Kaoru, that I am. I knew that one day I would leave from your side and that thought tortured me." He couldn't stand looking into her eyes, so his gaze slowly shifted towards the ground.

"But you are not like the others, Kenshin! You changed! You are no longer a murderer! You left me once before and you promised never to leave me again! So why do you have to go!?" Her eyes had filled with tears and she clung tightly on to his pink sleeve.

"I thought I had changed as well, Miss Kaoru, but really, I will always be the same person inside. I have tried to forget the people that I have killed, but I can not. If I was able to reveal the old battosai, then that means that he still lives inside of me." Kenshin drew her near to him and shook his head.

"But in the time that I spent here, I learned many things. I learned the meaning of love, that I have." He lightly brushed his lips against hers.

They slowly pulled apart and Kaoru fell on her knees. "Please, Kenshin. Don't leave me, please…" Her voice trailed off, and she held her head in her hands.

"Miss Kaoru, wherever I go, be sure that I will always love you, that I will. And maybe someday, when the night has fallen yet again, I will return."

She listened to his footsteps sink into the woods until she could no longer hear them.

"Goodbye, Kenshin."
