Suffocate

An chill goes through your body – the hand that you still are holding has gone limb. Staring is all what you are capable of for a few seconds at this. Once bright, pristine blue lies defeated in front of you in the dust, marred and faint. Oily black streaks the blue, is running in warm rivulets around your knees. These optics have gone dark.

You call out his name. When he doesn't answer, you do so again. He was just talking to you a few seconds ago! You repeat his name.

His optics were online! Why won't he answer? He is stronger than that, stronger than them all. So why won't he ANSWER? Every time the name gets louder and louder and louder until you are shouting, screaming at him to talk. Not to simply lie there in the freezing wind to get colder and colder.

It hurts your throat. You don't care. Please – just a little twitch in this face. A tightening of these fingers in yours. Anything will be enough.

The oil gets cold around your knees. The heat that leaves his body brushes past yours into the air. You lean closer as if to shelter him while the strain of shouting – so useless – makes your chest heave although you don't need to breathe. You can't go on with your overclocked systems.

Despite being so close to his face, you don't feel any movement of air. His mouth is slightly open; totally still.

The realisation makes you choke. Leaning over him you laugh as despite the warmth, despite that none of you needs to breathe, he won't need to do it either way anymore.

It stops being funny as you look at him again and there's nothing in his face to share your laughter.

Optics blur. Everything wells up in your chest, gets stuck in your throat and you can't let go of either the earth and his hand when you lean forward, you would fall forever otherwise. Because the ground is suddenly over you, the sky under you.

You do not think.

You do not speak.

You just lean your forehead against his.

This is all that matters. There is only one thing left to do. For you.

For him.

So open your mouth and-

Take a breath in and let it all go.
