She always hated the thunder. It always made her want to curl up in bed with a large comforter and pretend the storm wasn't raging outside. The news had come by way of the telephone, a conversation with her sister. Her mother was ill, gravely ill and there was nothing Samantha could do to help.

She sat in the darkness absorbed in her sadness, the lightening gleaming and lighting her room. The phone stared at her, mocking her. She knew she could call Martin and he would be over in a flash to talk to her but she didn't want Martin. The man she wanted to call, the man whose arms she wanted to curl up inside the comforter with was with someone else protecting her from the thunder.

She wondered if once Jack was gone she wouldn't automatically reach out to him for comfort. She was trying to learn to depend on Martin but it wasn't the same. With Jack it was natural. She had never been someone who needed another person to take care of her, she thought of herself as very independent. But that was before Jack Malone entered her life, her bed and eventually her heart. She tried too hard to develop that dependence on Martin to no avail.

In the dark amidst the lightening and the thunderbolts she crept under the blankets and tried to get warm. Fear was enveloping her life. Fear of losing her mother. Fear of not having Jack around. Fear of never feeling in love again. She wrapped herself up tightly in a cocoon of blankets and tried to sleep all alone.
