Summary: The original five interns have a conversation in their locker-room. Meredith's upset and her friends, including Evil Spawn Karev try to cheer her up. Key word: try. What are friends for? George, Izzie, Alex, Cristina and Meredith's friendship. One shot.
~Meredith POV~
"Is everything okay?" asks Cristina hesitantly. "You seem... sad."
"Everything's not okay", I say through my sobs, wrapping my arms around my waist and seating on the bench in the intern locker-room.
"What happened?" she continues.
"Derek's wife is pregnant", I tell her.
"Oh!" my friend pats my shoulder, somewhat nervously. Which is understandable as she's Cristina Yang and doesn't cope well in situations where there are emotions (mainly tears which are a sign of weakness to her), mentions of babies and talking of feelings.
"Yeah", I sniffle. "I thought they were getting a divorce and then BAM, I'm sent to pick up lab results; results which happen to belong to Dr. Montgomery Shepherd and I know I shouldn't have looked at them but I did because I was curious and then I found out."
"Maybe it's not McDreamy's", suggests Cristina. "I mean, come on, this is Satan we're talking about. She's cheated once. Who says she won't do it again?"
"Don't keep your hopes up", says Alex Karev, as he approached the two women. "Izzie and I-" he stops in between to look at the blonde next to him.
Izzie clears her throat. "We saw She-Shepherd tell He-Shepherd", she supplies sadly, knowing just how unhappy this news is making me feel but it's better I hear this from her, rather than anyone else.
"And then he kissed her", says Alex.
"He was smiling too", says George, shaking his head. "He looked happy too."
Just great! George was there too?
"Is this supposed to make me feel better?" I ask, arching an eyebrow.
"Yeah, is this supposed to make her feel better?" echoes Cristina. "You guys suck at this little thing you're doing."
"What are we doing here?" Alex whispers to George but he's loud enough for all of us to hear. "Why are we stuck in this girl talk session? Give me one good reason, O' Malley."
"You're here 'cause Izzie dragged you along", replies my roommate. "As for me, I'm actually friends with Mere."
"Shut up", hisses Izzie. "You two are useless." Then she turns to me. "What we're trying to say here is that we're here for you, Mere. I know it feels horrible that he chose her but end of the day, it's his loss."
"She's McHot but she's kinda scary too", adds Alex with a shudder. "Shepherd deserves her. Evil banshee, that woman."
"She's not that bad", says Izzie with a pointed look, "but we don't care whether she's nice or not. Look..."
"We're your friends!" chimes in George. "And we love you."
"What he said", nods Izzie. "Forget Derek."
That's so not happening.
"Guys come and go", says Cristina with a small shrug.
"Friends stick around forever", inputs Alex. "Sure, we all don't get along most of the time but we're interns. We stick together."
"Did you just say what I think you just said?" asks Izzie, in shock.
"I know I'm going to regret saying this", says Cristina. "He's right."
Alex smiles smugly. "I always am."
"What happens next?" I ask unhappily, looking around the room.
Not one of them has an answer.
"I don't know", admits Izzie.
"We'll find out as time passes", says Alex.
"We'll help you figure it out", says George, with a shrug.
"Seeing as we're all being sappy here", sighs Cristina. "I might as well join in. We're gonna make sure you're alright."
Why's that?
Because that's what friends are for.
