"Sam."
She reached out, gently traced the path of his tears across smooth cheek down to the roughness of a day's growth of stubble. Sam didn't pull away but his breath hitched on a sob that any other time would have broken her heart. Now she wondered that he could show so much sorrow for a monster like her.
"Please," she said, no longer knowing what she was asking for. Mercy? Release? A last minute reprieve?
The barrel of the pearl-handled pistol was cold against her forehead. Taking pity on her lover, she closed her eyes.
Let darkness claim her.
