Shots rang all around, bullets wizz past the rocks and ground keeping them safe, enter player name Whitewolf, an excited and happy guy with a good sense of humor, new to a game his friend loved. The game played was Gun Gale Online, GGO for short. After a good friend of his recommended him to play the game he said he would try it, first day in and well things aren't going so smoothe.
"Gryphon what are you doing!" shouted wolf
"Just trust me I know what I'm doing, stay low and keep laying down fire, you'll be fine backup is on the way." Gryphon answered.
"Listen Griph I know you're crazy and all but don't you know when to quit?" asked wolf.
"Nope" he leaped over the rock and pulled out his side arm, a .44 hammer action magnum, capable of hammer fanning. Gryphon was a hunter for a while but he got bored of the same old monsters, he'd even killed aliens from crashed ship events. Such events is where he got his primary weapon a pump action 12 gauge shotgun, he nicknamed "hellfire" it fires slugs and can also use dragon's breath rounds for starting fires.
Gryph ran and shot left and right real quick, hitting each target directly in the forehead every shot, never wasted a bullet. The bullet popped up quick he only shot when the line would be lined up, then he'd shoot to kill. One player ran up to the side of him, a shower of bullets from an M16 poured over Gryph. He needed to run and take cover that would be the smart thing to do, however he's not smart. Instead he pushed his left leg and it shot him into the air, mid air he switched to his shotgun and opened up onto the man.
"One" he said as the dead marker appeared over head. He turned around and shot a rock, the slugs destroyed the rocks that was hiding someone revealing his location. A second shot rang off after another slug blew the entire upper half of the enemy off. "Two" there were still four left, he killed the hunters with the group, now he was working on the guards they were a problem, he needed to make his friend some cash, so they went player hunting.
Four guards jumped out from behind rocks all around him "GIVE UP AND WE'LL KILL YOU QUICK!" one shouted.
"I'm sorry you seem to take me not very seriously, you'll need to move or I'll have to mow you down like my front lawn." Gryph responded.
"Yeah right we won't listen to the likes of you."
"Shame, well boys the cavalry has arrived" he hit the ground quick, he stabbed a smoke grenade that was on him that shot smoke all over. The smoke covered the surrounding area.
A trail of dust kicked up from a hill right by them, a woman with a lmg M27 slid down and chopped them all down, there was screaming and random shots from the body guards in the smoke. Dead markers popped up and then their bodies dissipated into an exploding dust.
"That's the last of them" Gryphon said standing up, he dusted himself off and looked around. "Nice shooting you may as well of destroyed the ground beneath you"
"Oh shut up who came and saved your sorry ass?" The woman said, her name was Tepid Arc in game but people just called her Arc for short. Arc slung her huge lmg behind her back and looked at wolf hiding behind a rock.
"They're dead, you can come out now." Arc said to him.
"Oh yeah I guess they are look at that, so how much did we make from them?" He asked he really needed to buy new guns he couldn't stand the handgun he started with when he bought it.
"We only made about three thousand-"Gryph was saying before he got cut off.
"Here take this kid, you don't need to worry about making money right now." Arc went and opened her inventory and sent White Wolf a gift.
"You're giving me four million credits?!" Wolf said in shock, he couldn't comprehend what just happened to him, he didn't need all this money he would work for it himself. "I don't need all this really I'll go get-" he was cut off.
"Nonsense get yourself some real guns buddy, have Gryph take you to town and he'll take you out to get some nice guns." Arc said "after all a soldier is as good as dead without his weapon."
"We'll head out now and I'll help him get a weapon he'll enjoy I'll make sure of it." Gryphon said, he left with a goodbye to Arc and headed to find weapons for White Wolf. "so do you have any idea of what you wanna run?" he asked.
"Nope, not in the slightest idea." Wolf responded he went silent for a few minutes and thought to himself. There's so much I could choose from in this game, I've always been a fan of pistols so I'll definitely want an upgrade from that. He thought about it and walked, he wasn't paying attention to where he was walking, since he was staring at the ground thinking to himself spaced out the entire time. Wolf walked face first into the barrel of a destroyed tank and he fell flat on his ass.
"Nice going genius I see you have the attention span of a goldfish and the memory of one too." Gryph said sticking his hand out to help his friend up.
Wolf grabbed his hand and pulled himself up; "what? I have no idea what you're talking about."
Gryph laughed "yeah exactly, town's still pretty far and you don't have fast travel unlocked yet so we need hoof it from here, so stay in front and as long as you cover our twelve I'll cover your six."
"Sounds good enough to me let's get going then, no need to burn more time than we need to." Wolf started walking, he had his pistol in his hand at his side incase he needed it, but if he saw anything of actual danger he'd just aleart his teammate of the thing that needs dead and he'd be more than happy to assist.
"Hey make sure to keep an eye on your eleven and two this is a big area for player killers so we need to be careful here. Follow me, stay on my six, don't fall behind, and no matter what, do not stay open to the east for more than thirty seconds." Gryph explained, this was a crucial area that was right by the gate to get back to the town but people here usually bully new players just starting out in the desert by using the sniper tower to the west as a vantage point; the rocks keep shotgunners hidden by the abandoned houses, they also keep machine gunners hidden, and worst of all the minefields, they're everywhere.
The barren wastelands of the desert had certain calmness to it. It was an interesting calm to say the least, there wasn't anything to be heard is the crunching of sand underneath your feet and the whisk of rough sand against your face. Gunfire rang in the distance, a sense of danger always put people on the edge.
"How close are we from the town?" Wolf asked after a short time. The quiet was killing him, the gunfire didn't help he wanted to just run, run like he never has before. Just run and run to town, he didn't want to be shot in the back. Then again who would?
" Three clicks north and we're there. First there's a barren open land not a single building or rock for miles, a perfect spot for a minefield. Doesn't usually work for new players, however the multitude of new players going through here for the best monsters and dungeons are easy targets for those mines. Second there's an abandoned city that was destroyed by a dust storm, dust covers broken roofs and porches, anyone who makes it past the minefield is most likely to get picked off from and machine gunners and snipers. Last right be the exit is a huge tower to the west face, snipers are usually covering that exit, and while it's half a quarter mile off, any sniper with a reasonable amount of skill, will be able to hit you from there. News flash if you didn't pay attention in the tutorial any snipers first shot doesn't have a bullet line, if they go five minutes without taking a shot it resets." Gryph explained , people take this game seriously especially with the ingame system of turning ingame currency into real life money people go nuts over it, they treat it like a whole damn military operation for christ sake.
Gryph and Wolf, had been walking for a few minutes, Wolf was terrified of all that he heard from his friend. Minefields, ambushes, snipers, this game was a death trap for all who played it really. He felt pretty lucky to have known someone from the inside who could help him out with all of it. He would be completely lost without his help.
"We're heading up onto the minefields now stay on my tail, take every step I take, and I mean that literally. I told you already step in the footprints left behind on the ground, or you'll be blown to bits, just like everyone else whose travelled through here unknowingly."
He nodded in agreement, the terror-stricken sense of about to blown up was never a fun one. However he needed to get use to it, to be able to play efficiently without having his heart rate spike and get automatically signed out.
Step after step after step Gryphon kept his eyes laid onto the ground, he had a special skill. Hard to get too, you had to be able to make explosives of all kinds, before you unlocked explosive detection. He wasn't scared of every little thing around him. Aware of the situation of anything went south then his buddy would have his back in an instant, he didn't know what he was doing be he sure knew he would have his back.
Several stressful minutes of bobbing and waving in zig-zags and they cleared the explosive land bridge. Wolf sighed in relief when he heard Gryph say that they had cleared the field, but still he was anxious to get back to town and get a setup of weapons going. He had a few in mind, being a big fan of the weapon he new for a fact he was going to get a Colt-19. A powerful handgun very much capable of destroying a target, but he didn't have a single clue for his primary weapon still.
They didn't speak unless needed, Gryph didn't want to get over heard then turned into swiss cheese. Thinking about swiss cheese made him hungry he'd been diving all day, as a result he didn't get much time to eat actual food.
"We're coming up on the town now, at this time most people are logging off but we need to get moving, anyone else on is likely to be big groups or elite players. We can't sign out in here so we need to get to town, once we get there I need to leave but I trust you can buy your own gear."
"Yeah yeah I'll be alright, now like you said we gotta be quiet here, incase someone comes through to punch his full of holes and all." with that the boys shut up and continued on their mighty march
Wolf glanced around to look at the scenery around him, he took it all in. It looked stunning it really did, he just was ready to get his gear and go. The houses were to the east of them so he kept his eyes peeled to them. He was instructed to keep and eye on them, for any movement or enemy activity. The red dust highlighted the white and the green left behind on the houses.
In a spurr of a moment there was an explosion from behind them, Wolf turned around in an instant, he ducked behind his buddy and stood over him in a stance to where he stood with his pistol across his companion while he drew his shotgun and crouched in front of him.
After a few moments Gryph stood up a relaxed: "Someone set off a land mine in the field we just crossed. We need to get this Charlie Foxtrot of a duo to the town so we're gonna haul our ass up there."
They packed their weapons up in their respected holsters and ran up to the checkpoint, not too long after a second explosion chimed in the distance. Moving fast was essential and in fact, necessary for their survival out in the open.
The travel gate was just within viewing distance from where they were standing, it was an opening to a canyon and then big rocks making a u-shape covering the gate from all sides. Right before they ran into the open Gryphon stopped Wolf's running and hid behind a rock right next to the opening.
"Here's the deal the only snipers that can hit us from this distance are bolt action rifles. We have about one and a half seconds to run, from here to there so when I run you run got it?"
He nodded his head in agreement. Gryph took a decent sized rock he found a threw it out into the open and immediately ran out to the other side and his pal followed right behind, the rock was blown to pieces, the sniper at the first sign of movement shot it.
They made it to the gate and traveled back to town and were all in one piece.
"We did it, holy crap we did it!" Wolf exclaimed.
"Yeah good job on your first operation buddy now I gotta go have dinner and catch some sleep but I'll see you tomorrow."
"I got some shopping to do but then I'll be doing the same part on my end, I'll catch ya later pal." and with that the familiar message "Gryphon is offline" appeared on the side of his view.
