Not Dead, But Dying

The air, it seemed so...thick. It was becoming so hard to draw breaths into his body. He didn't want to be here, not in this place of complete carnage. Everything smelled of blood, death and ultimately despair. The red head continued his walk through the cold December air towards a decaying building.

"What happened to this place? This shouldn't have happened. We...we were making so much progress, why did this have to happen?" Tala, the red head, stood in front of the aged building. The area around him held nothing but the destruction of so many innocent lives. He looked at the snow beneath his feet. It was thick with blood and bits of what he hoped was only abandoned rations, not the flesh of a fellow being. Tala really wanted this all to just be in his demented imagination or, better yet, just a nightmare that he would eventually wake from. Even if this was a nightmare, he felt he wouldn't ever become a part of the living world again.

Continuing his walk, Tala entered the building. As the door opened a horrible odor was brought to his attention. The smell alone was enough to make him heave the remainder of his rations. Taking care not to step in his mess, Tala took in the sight before him.

"Blood. It's...it's everywhere. This was more than a battle...it was a massacre. No one stood a chance. No one saw it coming; how could they?"

"T...tala..." The faint voice made Tala turn around almost immediately. The pain filled voice sounded so familiar, but he just couldn't place it. The voice continued to whimper his name and the need in the words was effecting his heart. Moving closer to the source, his heart seemed to stop. Kai was supported against the wall and was bleeding profusely from a bullet wound to his mid-section.

"KAI! Oh Kai...why? Why did it have to be you?!"

"I..I couldn't let them take you, Tala."

"Why? You were the only one I had left Kai. Bryan was killed in the blast, Spencer was murdered on his way to us, and Ian...poor little Ian. What they did to him was the worst fate for a human being. He was practically begging for his death Kai. I-I can't lose you too!"

"T-tala...I'm s-sorry..." The tears that Tala was holding back had already broken through and rivers of the salty liquid cascaded down the red head's face. He was alone. Completely alone. No friends. No Family. And no Kai. He didn't know how long he sat there be his deceased love, but when Tala took his first shaking steps towards the door the sky had faded into a soulless black velvet. Tala walked into the blood stained snow and stood silently staring at the night sky.

"This wasn't the plan. None of this was planed. Boris promised that we would all live...he said it was just a brief re-con mission. We were only to retrieve a rare component for him and then we would all go home and talk about the up coming tournament."

Things, as Tala experienced, never really go "according to plan". The only thing that you can be certain about is that there would always be someone to apologize to, Tala had learned that early on. No one would remember his friends in a month's time. No one cared that so many truly innocent lives were lost. No one that is but him. He would remember, even if he didn't want to. The pain filled screams of his team mates would forever haunt his dreams and their fear filled eyes would become the reason for his pain, regret, and self-loathing. After these events, Tala Ivanov, would never really be "alive".

But, for now, all he could do was leave the realm of bad memories behind.
