Chapter 1

"Derek, I can't let you do this. As your Alpha. No as your older sister I'm asking you to reconsider," Pleaded Laura.

"It's mine. I can do what I want with it."

Deep down he knew Laura would never understand his attachment to the house. To the only place he'd ever felt safe and happy.

Being the only son of Talia Hale meant Derek had inherited his family's land only days ago when he had turned 21. And with the land came the house. Their childhood home that had been mostly destroyed by the fire that had killed the rest of their family. Their pack. Laura was now the alpha of what remained of their family.

He and Laura had been at school when the fire happened. Their uncle Peter had sustained burns to more than 80% of his body saving their younger sister Cora. He remained in a hospital unresponsive, Derek tried to visit whenever he could.

"Please Derek don't punish yourself like this. The fire was not your fault!" Laura tried to reason. But it was his fault. If he'd just ignored Kate Argent, not let her get to him. Not let her crawl under his skin and consume him. His pack would be alive. His family would be alive.

"What makes you think that restoring the house is a way for me to punish myself?" He questioned.

"Derek, I can hear your heart beat. I can hear it pounding in your chest. I know every time you got upset growing up, every time you failed a test. You would always come here," she whispered looking around at the broken, twisted, burned remains of their childhood home. "You come here to punish yourself. You could never let it go, the pain you feel. Me and Cora we struggled, but we managed to move on. Why can't you?"

"What do you want me to do? Leave it like this? A constant reminder of how bad I screwed up?" Yelled Derek wanting the conversation to just be over.

"Okay, so you're going to rebuild the house. Then what? You're going to live here? Like how you hid here that Summer after your 15th birthday?" Derek didn't say anything. He didn't need to. His beating heart betrayed him, singing loud and clear his answer to Laura. "Over my dead body!" Yelled Laura. "What you should do is tear this place down. I'm not going to let you drowned in the past Derek. Not anymore!"
