There is nothing better than lying on a cool field of grass, at dusk, listening to the wind and the grass hopper crickets, Aang decided, as he did just that, staring up at the darkening sky. The only thing that could possibly have made it better….
"Aang?"
He sat up, and looked around. Katara was sitting next to him, with a slightly troubled look on her face.
"Katara? Is everything all right?"
"Yeah… I'm just… tired" she replied, turning away from him slightly. Aang frowned. Why was she tired? They hadn't had any late night run in's with Azula and her gang lately… Plucking up his courage, he asked tentatively
"What's wrong?"
"I um… I haven't been sleeping very well" Katara muttered. Then, without waiting for an answer, she ploughed on.
"I just… I just keep having this dream. I have it over and over again. And I can't deal with it anymore Aang. I don't know what to do…" her voice trailed away, and Aang was startled to see her eyes were glossy with unshed tears. Unsure what else to do, he held out his arms to her. She hugged him gratefully.
"Do you want to tell me what the dream is?" he asked quietly. He could feel her shivering slightly as she answered.
"It's just that night. Every night I see it, I see you fall… I see you unconscious… I see myself trying to heal you with the spirit water… only, in my dreams… you don't wake up" Katara was crying softly now. Aang could feel droplets of water fall onto his neck, and he tightened his arms around her.
"But it did work, Katara. I did wake up. I'm here now, and I promise I'll never leave you again"
She stopped crying, and looked at him, eyes wide and sad.
"How can you know you'll be able to keep that promise?" she asked very seriously.
"Have I ever broken a promise before?"
"No" she said, smiling tremulously.
Together they walked back to the campsite. And that night, they fell asleep holding hands.
A/N: Kataang OTP 5 ever. They need to stop being so perfect, I swear.
