A/N: Ah…

Damn. I don't know what to proclaim this, only that I don't think it fit in my drabble collection, and I felt the need to share it with all of you in some weird attempt at trying to keep the plot bunnies at bay. Once again, I declare this something different. Hope you guys enjoy; and please, constructive criticism if you wouldn't mind.

Disclaimer: I don't own Death Note… thank god. Did you SEE how crazy Light looked in some of those scenes?! NOT SEXY-DELICIOUS MY FRIENDS. :O

Title: My Blue Heaven

It's eating me alive.

Fingers gently fell against warm skin, a dull sensation tightening against his chest.

All I want…

Closing his dark eyes, the sounds of bells rang in the backdrop of his lucid dreams.

Is to not die.

Whatever happened to those days were the most important thing was whether or not the case within my hands would last the rest of the week?

L sipped on his tea, wondering if the taste would actually comfort him this time.

I'm so stubborn…

The rankling of a chain threw the older man off guard for a moment-

But so is he.

But only for a moment.

When did this become so routine?

Holding back a snide remark, L took another sip of his drink.

How many more days before this routine is finally broken, I wonder?

He's too perfect to be real.

Yagami Soichirou shifted uncomfortably in his seat as L leaned forward, the monitor in front of him flickering with images he was not too comfortable with.

It's almost as if he's taunting me without even realizing it…

A small cough caught L's attention; his stare continued onward, however.

Or is that the game he wishes to play?

Another cough, this one a lot less subtle than the first.

If that is true, he could not have picked a better opponent.

Not even blinking, L shifted his foot against the cushion of the seat he was perched upon.

And neither could I.

This isn't right.

L peered at the tanned-skinned boy out of the corner of his eye, honestly confused.

What isn't clicking here?

Light smiled as he pointed to the screen in front of him, eyes tight and narrow with exhaustion.

This… is a different kind of game.

L nodded at something Light said, not even sure what he was agreeing to.

But, I don't know the rules this time.

The honey-eyed teen laughed before shrugging, the chain attached between them jingling as he did so.

I can't lose.

Once again, L nodded silently.

I won't.

I'm so tired.

The dark-haired detective stared up at the crying skies, his head aching with sound.

Just… so tired.

The door behind him swung open, and L could barely find it in him to care.

I suppose even I am not infallible.

Someone began speaking, but L didn't want to listen.

But I knew that already.

Not when all he could hear were those damn bells.

Even before he did.

I don't want to admit it…

Light sighed in his sleep, turning over on his side just as L pushed the laptop off of his person.

But I don't know how to win this game.

Rubbing the crease between his eyes, L felt his age tower over him; a mere 25 years seeming to stretch so much longer than they should have.

Is this what fear feel likes?

Instead of lying back on the bed and closing his eyes, the twitchy detective pulled his knees up to his chest and let his head fall forward.

Why does it feel as if I've already lost?

The rest of the night rolled on in a blur as L stared at the jean fabric covering his legs.

What am I missing…?

This is interesting…

L almost smirked as he stared at his computer, the highlighted name taking all his attention away from the other information presented to him.

I must take this case.

Tracing the words with a pale, skeletal finger, the three greatest investigators in the world finally let the predatory smile burst against his chapped lips.

If only for my own interest, of course.

Trick.

The suddenly-timid teen backed against the water-soaked wall behind him, lips plump and red.

This has to be a trick.

Light shook his head as he stuttered out an apology.

I won't fall for it.

Waving his arms in a placating sort of way, Light's lips twitched downward.

Another game.

Before another word could fall from the boy's mouth, L pushed him backward and lunged forward.

This one, I'll win.

Was it…

Eyes began to dim as the distressed face in front of them morphed into one of malicious satisfaction.

A mistake?

One last time…

L closed his eyes as he smiled, the boy curled around him tightening his grip over his shoulders.

Let me hold you like this just one last time.

What would it have been like, had I not been me and you, not you?

Dark eyes closed, lips trembling sporadically as his chest burst into flame.

Could I have won?

The darkness swirled and swirled until even the miniscule sounds became silenced.

Did I ever even want to?

Don't let go.

He silently watched as Light blinked over at him before turning back to the computer, a small blush set over his cheeks.

Don't ever let go.

Light called out his pseudonym again; this time, his visage contorted into one of confusion.

I guess I finally have my answer after all.

L ducked his head forward and sighed.

Wishes, unfortunately, will never amount to anything however.

Wishes have never amounted to anything-

L felt the last of his breath stutter out of him as reality pulled him out from his own body, the light no longer there to shield him.

And even I am not so deluded as to think that you would have wished for something else instead.
