Disclaimer: If I said it was mine I'd be lying…

Lisbon remembered the day oh so clearly. It had started as a good day. Jane had been behaving himself that day. She remembered how close the two of them had grown. He was her rock, oddly keeping her sane when at times he infuriated her! She was his rock, helping him through the tough times. He had even begun to get over Red John. What had started as a good day for Lisbon had very quickly turned into one of the worst. In fact, it was probably the second worst day of her adult life. The worst was today.

It had happened just after lunch; Van Pelt had notified them of an email she had received, giving them a tip off about Red John. Jane had lost it, saying that they were so close this time. That he could feel it. Honestly! Sure enough they had followed the lead and Jane had ended up face to face with Red John, the man that had tormented him for so long. The man that, thanks to Lisbon, he had been getting over.

Lisbon, Cho, Rigsby and Van Pelt were in possibly the worst position. They could see everything through the window but were unable to stop him thanks to an internally locked door. They saw words exchanged and Lisbon could tell that Jane had been trying to keep calm. It had taken a simple action. As simple as a bird chirping or a wave breaking. A tree branch. A God damned tree branch had tapped on the window causing Red John to shoot Jane with the gun none of them knew he possessed. Red John obviously thought that Jane would come alone and so had taken off through the door.

Lisbon remembered that she had Cho and Rigsby on him instantly. Van Pelt had called the ambulance and she herself had rushed to Jane's side. There had been blood everywhere. He was instantly taken to hospital and rushed to surgery. The team had followed. Lisbon didn't speak the whole time. It wasn't till Jane's surgeon came that Lisbon allowed herself to speak. And when the doctor had delivered the news she had been beside herself. They didn't expect him to wake up.

That had led to today, a day like any other and not like that day 3 months ago when the happenings had occurred; Lisbon had taken leave and barely left the hospital. Red John had been jailed for life. One of the other team members checked on Lisbon and Jane every night.

But nothing had changed and today they were pulling the plug, turning off his life support. After the final goodbyes the team stood outside his room, watching through the glass window. Tears streamed down Lisbon's face. As much as she would have hated to admit this months ago, Lisbon needed this man. And now he was gone. The doctor moved to switch off his life support and Lisbon was hysterical.

I forgot to say out loud how beautiful you really are to me

I can't be without, you're my perfect little punching bag
And I need you, I'm sorry.

Lisbon placed her hand on the glass of the window and, as the long beep of death echoed through the sombre room whispered, "please, don't leave."
