a/n: so this one shot is just to let my nerd flag fly. I was listening to Still Alive (the ending song from Portal) and I got this mental image of Adrian sitting at his desk eating cake thinking about what a great service he did for humanity. So here it goes:
In Which Adrian Eats Cake:
Adrian sat at his desk lost in thought. His secretary walked in and set a plate and fork on the desk. He looked up and smiled. This was as good a stopping point as any. He leaned back into his chair and began to eat the slice of cake. On the monitor, the local news was showing footage from the dedication ceremony. There was a huge crowed there to see the opening of Veidt Memorial Center.
It was a massive complex which incorporated a memorial, and an education center on what we learned of the alien invasion and what we can do to prevent future attacks. He was watching the speech that he delivered hour's earlier.
"This is not just a place to honor those who died that terrible day; it is a place for those who are here now; for those who are still alive."
Adrian cocked his head to the side and sat up to get a better view of the screen. His brow furrowed; he pressed pause on the telecast and zoomed on the upper right hand corner of the camera shot. Behind the memorial building, hanging from a skyscraper was a banner. He zoomed in further to read "The Cake is a Lie!!" Leaning back in his chair, he tried to remember the reference. He seemed to recall a video game that involved building a large gun.
Unconsciously, Adrian shrugged his shoulders. He took another bit of his cake; it's so delicious and moist; and set the plate on the desk. He was far too busy with this new utopia to be eating cake. He pulled his chair toward his desk and began focusing on how to keep this new era of global good will on track. While he did mourn those who were sacrificed in the name of world peace, he was certain that people would understand if they knew. It's for the good of all of us; except the ones who are dead.
a/n the title is a refrence to Winnie the Pooh, where the chapers are titled "In Which..."
