Farewell My Friend
Early the morning after the Victory Parade as Queen Amidala sat in front of her vanity and her handmaiden Rabé brushed out her unruly locks, there was a soft knock at the door.
"Sabé, will you please see who is at the door?" Amidala asked of her look-alike handmaiden.
"Of course, your highness," Sabé bowed. She opened the door to find ten-year-old Anakin Skywalker standing there, clad in his new Jedi robes.
"Hi, um I came to say good-bye to Padmé- I mean her highness," he said.
Sabé smiled. "Come in, Anakin," she said.
Anakin smiled back, "thank you."
The queen turned her head as Sabé reentered the room with Anakin close behind her, Amidala's face lit up with a bright smile, "Ani."
"Um, I just came to say good-bye, we're leaving soon," Anakin said, looking down at his feet.
The handmaidens quietly left the room as Amidala knelt in front of the small boy. "I'll miss you, Anakin, and I'll never forget you. I know you've lost a lot in such a short time, but you'll always have my friendship," she said softly as she hugged him.
"Really?" Anakin asked as he hugged her back.
Amidala laughed sweetly. "Yes, of course."
"You'll always have mine too, your highn-"
"Ani, you don't have to use titles, you can call me Padmé."
"Okay, Padmé," Anakin grinned.
Padmé laughed again. "You had better go." At his sullen look, she added, "we'll see each again, Anakin, of that I have no doubt."
"We will," he said firmly as he hugged her again, then he ran out the door to find Obi-Wan.
A half a standard hour late in the palace's main hanger, Anakin and Obi-Wan were preparing to leave when the Queen and her entourage entered.
"Knight Kenobi, Padawan Skywalker," the queen said, nodding her head to each. "It has been a pleasure knowing both of you, until we meet again, I wish you well."
"We will meet again, I'm sure," Obi-Wan replied. "I only hope the circumstances are better.
The Jedi and the queen bowed to each other, then the Jedi turned and boarded the transport that would take them back to Coruscant. Moments later the ship took off.
Queen Amidala -Padmé Naberrie- watched as the ship ascend the skies. "Farewell my friend," she whispered as it disappeared into the atmosphere.
