Another Thomas rewrite, this time it's "Toby's Tightrope" from Season 3. Enjoy and comment.

One day, Percy went to the quarry to collect stone for his freight cars.

Snow covered the ground, and everything was silent.

Percy moved forward, and saw Mavis, the new diesel engine, resting by some rocks.

"Cheer up Mavis!" whistled Percy.

Mavis didn't want to remember the time she had trouble with cars.

"Manager says I don't listen to advice! He says I have no business with fuss-pot Toby!"

"Toby has forgotten more about freight cars than you will ever know!" replied Percy. You must shunt the freight cars where Toby wants them! Then you'll be a really useful engine!"

Percy puffed away.

Mavis liked Percy, but didn't listen to his advice.

"Why can't I help out on Toby's line?" thought Mavis to herself.

The siding arrangements were confusing. To get them shunted into the right spots, Mavis had to make several trips.

She started to make a plan,

"If we only use a tiny part of Toby's line, we won't cause confusion and delay!"

Mavis's driver agreed, but only up until the first level crossing.

A few days later, the weather changed.

As the snow melted, work began to increase.

Some trains were so long, that Mavis had to go beyond the level crossing.

"Can you keep a secret?" asked Mavis to the freight cars.

"Yes, yes, yes!" exclaimed the freight cars.

"Will you bump me at the level crossing and keep it a secret?"

The freight cars agreed, but when Mavis left, Toby showed up, and decided to shunt the cars himself.

They reached the level crossing, and Toby's driver applied the brakes. This was the signal for the freight cars.

"On, on, on!" yelled the freight cars.

Toby set on, with the freight cars yelling and screaming behind him.

Nobody knew that melted snow had turned the stream into rainwater, and that the bridge above it was going to collapse.

The rails were now like a tightrope across the thundering water.

"Stop, stop!" cried Toby.

His driver fought for control as they neared the bridge.

The driver managed to apply the brakes, stopping Toby with his wheels trending on the tight-rope, over the abyss.

Mavis quickly came to the rescue.

Workmen anchored Toby with ropes, while she pulled the freight cars away.

Then, Mavis helped Toby to safety.

"I'm sorry about the cars!" said Mavis. "I don't know how you managed to stop them in time!"

"Oh well." replied Toby. "My driver told me about circus people who walk tightropes."

Later, Sir Topham Hatt arrived.

"Nice work both of you!" he said.

"But I'm sorry about the cars sir!" said Mavis. "If it's alright, can I come down the line? Toby will show me what to do."

"Certainly!" replied Sir Topham Hatt, "if your manager agrees!"

Now Mavis is a very happy diesel indeed,
