Barnabas and Angelique

Tale of the Sea

It was only about a few more hours until they finally reached the dock to enter "The New World". Angelique was up early, as she always was before anyone else. She did not dare wake up her mother, she was sure to hear an earful if she did. She got up, and silently got ready, then walked to the railing of the ship, overlooking the ocean, as the sun's bright rays colored over the sea, barely starting to rise. The sun's light reflected over Angelique, making her hair shine a bright brown, and her eyes match the deep blue ocean.

Her mind was running, but yet was at peace. She knew she didn't want to be a hand maiden all her life like her mother. That was for certain. Then there was Barnanbas. She was only 10 years old, but she felt drawn to him for some reason. Almost quickly, her thoughts were thrown off when two dolphins jumped out of the ocean together, leaping freely in and out of the sea. Angelique's big blue eyes widened with awe, as she admired them.

Suddenly, she felt a hand lightly rest and tap on her shoulder, then pull away from it as a figure, about her heighth, maybe a couple of inches taller, stood beside her watching the dolphins as well. She jumped a little, feeling startled as she looked over to her right, to see who this was...Barnabas Collins.

"Good morning, miseour Barnanbas." She courtsied ever so politely, and eyed him for a moment, then flashed her eyes back to the sea. From the corner of her eye, she saw him smile.

"You do not have to call me 'miseour', Angelique." He glanced at her. "Barnanbas is fine." He added, still looking at her.

A little embarassed, Angelique stayed quiet, a bit intimidated to respond to him as he looked back, not seeing the dolphins anymore. He continued staring at the ocean.

"If I may ask, what are you doing up so early, Angelique?" Barnabas' eyes flickered to her. "Well, I'm always so accustomed to getting up early, that once I awaken I cannot go back to sleep." She answered quietly, carefully and looked at Barnabas as well. He nods then his eyes flash to the sea, studying it closely as Angelique notices this.

Angelique kept staring at Barnabas once more, before she remembers what her mother says about doing that and quickly turns to gaze back at the ocean again. "The sea is so beautiful, I think." Barnabas starts out, and Angelique nods in agreement. "Your eyes, they match the ocean." He says quietly, then tilts his head to Angelique.

She feels her heart flutter in her chest , taking in his words, as Barnabas tells her this. Not sure what to say, or even if she should say anything, she does the same and sees Barnabas from the corner of her eye, still gazing at her. Against her will, a small smile appears on her face, finally meeting her eyes with Barnabas', them both exchanging the same smile.

Breaking the moment, Angelique hears her mother; "Angelique, Angelique! What are you doing?" Angelique's eyes quickly flashed to her mother as she sees her approaching to the railing, grabbing her arm with force.

"What have I told you about this? Huh? You do not learn your lesson." Her mother quietly yells at her, her eyes engulfed with fury, as she looks at Barnabas. "Excuse us, miseour Barnabas." For a moment she says gently, then yanks Angelique by her arm, continuing to yell at her with a whisper, as Angelique can't help but turn back to look at Barnabas, him doing the same; both exchanging looks of sadness, and wishing things were different.
