John Winter and Ashley Mistrider were as close as the magical elements are to each other. Fire and ice are not enemies, if you cast them together the right way they form a beautiful a mist. Winter was her protector and Mistrider was his everything ever since he was a child he dreamed of serving her. He promised one day that he wouldn't let a single tear fall down her cheek as he seen it happen before and her face was covered in tragic beautiful ice.
Their adventures were amazing, and the two grew close and closer, but Mistrider was pledged and loved another prince from a kingdom full of mustachio men. Winter always knew this since they were children that royalty belongs with royalty. But one night as they sat underneath the stars together joking about the old maid at the castle resembling the troll they had fought earlier something happened between the two of them.
It is said when two magicians connect on a deep level their magics combine into something dazzling. And that was when they had their first kiss. A shooting star that was passing up above in the sky suddenly stopped right above them and you could see it's trail. All Winter wanted at that moment was for the shooting star to stay where it was. For that moment to last.
But reality was even more cold than the ice itself.
Mistrider loved another and Winter was a Myth wizard, why were flames and sparks starting to shoot out from him whenever he saw her from now. His chest hung heavy as their adventures continued and he smiled through her smiles but his armor started to feel more heavy as each night "Good night my dear knight." "Good night my princess."
Then on a day that was as lovely as any other before, they went to the magic scroll shop and collected reading materials for the adventure ahead. They stopped at a traveling merchant selling food where they stopped and watched the birds in the forest. She played her instrument which was even as beautiful as her voice. But Winter for the first time didn't only want to protect her, he wanted to be beside her. And when he thought about it more, it wasn't the first time, maybe it was the entire time.
As they got to the inn the night was more cold than usual and the fire was being blown by the wind so Mistrider and Winter sat next to each other in their room close to each other like when they were kids. The feelings in Winters heart was like that star that stopped that night they kissed he wanted to pluck from the sky and give to her forever but also as if that star was going to explode one day.
Winter lived up to his name in the end. He never wanted to make ice fall out of her eyes, but he felt like he couldn't protect her like he wanted being torn in each way. And just moments ago the princess was smiling and now it was as if both their worlds were crumbling. He put the weight of his heart on her shoulders and he did it much too quickly. She demanded in her royal tone with ice on cheeks that he leave, and Winter could only say ... "Princess I'm sorry." and as he left the inn and wandered into the snow he knew he had made some sort of mistake...
