I don't own Axis Powers: Hetalia
The festival was lively as Spain walked on the main street in the small Italian town. All around him there was talking people and happy families. All were laughing and chattering delightfully. He had been looking for Romano but this little festival was so fun looking he just had to stop and see it.
Spain just followed the current of the crowd and went where ever it took him. He smiled flirtatiously at the young women who walked with him a ways before they had found their families or dates in the crowd. Spain just watched them go.
The dark haired man stopped at a street side vendor and bought some of the native wine to share with Romano when he found him. He knew that Romano had all the wine he could ever want but Spain hoped that the gift will make Romano truly smile, if only for a moment.
Spain wished Romano smiled like that all the time. His eyes would light up and all the tenseness in his face would just drain away. Spain chuckled. Romano would promptly cover his carefree expression with a glare and say something rude along with it but Spain knew that Romano rarely meant it.
The crowd that Spain had been following slowly came to a stop in the middle of the street. Some band off to the side of the road was playing a traditional folk tune. He had heard this particular tune before. But that was unsurprising as Spain had been around the Italy Brothers for a very long time.
Spain found a blank space of wall near the band to watch what was going to happen next. If there was a band then there will be dancers. He smiled when they came out of a nearby shop and began to clap their hands in time with the music. The crowd naturally created a circle for them to dance in and the dancers gratefully took it.
One of them was a very familiar person.
Romano was one of the dancers. He wore traditional clothing of black, red and white. And he was smiling. It was nice and pleasant but it looked a little forced.
Spain clapped his hands in time with the music along with the rest of the people. He laughed gaily as the music picked up speed and the dancers moved along with it. He watched as Southern Italy danced with his partner and smiled for her. But Spain could not bring himself to be jealous; he knew that smile was meant for the whole crowd. It was not the one he wanted to see.
One change in formation and Italy could see him. Spain knew that Romano could see him because his smile had faded into a surprised glare before he hid it. He had not missed a step but that's what happens when you've been dancing it for several hundred years.
As Southern Italy continued to dance his expression changed from the stage smile that had graced his face earlier. It was more open and happy. His dark brown eyes light up and Spain could not take his own off of him.
Romano was truly smiling and this time Spain hoped it was for him.
