Lindsay's POV:
No words can express how she felt when she saw the underwater video of Danny and Hawkes struggling. She felt as if the outside world was constricting around her heart, making every heartbeat difficult. She forced herself to remain calm in front of Mac but inside she was screaming.
When Danny and Hawkes came to the surface, she felt that her composure was back. She had to maintain a sense of strength as she didn't want anybody to know what she was experiencing. She knew it was the dangers of the job, but she couldn't help the way that she felt for Danny. Both of them had been put in situations that required both of them to set aside how they felt and for both of them to help each other. She felt that her composure was slipping.
It became more apparent when Danny returned back to the lab. Hawkes had been sent home and Danny came in with the recovered evidence. He went over to the corner of the lab and reached for his lab coat that was hanging on the hook. He was not aware that he was being watched by her.
He went over to the table that she was working at and was working the evidence in the syringe when she had to speak up.
"The worst part was watching and not being able to do anything about it." Lindsay said sadness in her voice.
"Wasn't much better being there in person, trust me." Danny said, concentrating on gathering the cyanide gas into the extra syringe.
"You know he's lucky that he had you down there with him, Danny" Lindsay said smiling at him.
"Stop goofing off, we've got work to do." He said to her and he caught the small smile that she had on her face.
Danny's POV:
He never wanted to worry her. When he was down at the bottom of the East River, he knew that she was watching the broadcast at the lab. So when Hawkes was trapped underneath the ships mast, he knew that she was feeling the same sense of panic and fright that was coursing through his body.
When he came back from the field, he knew that he had to protect her. He knew that she was going to ask questions about what happened and he didn't have an answer prepared yet. He was ready to admit to the woman that he was scared.
So when she said that she was glad that he was down there for Hawkes, he told her to stop goofing off. He wasn't mad at her; he just didn't want her to worry about him. He had enough of people concerned about him when he had his hand crushed. He gave a small smile to her as both of them continued processing the evidence.
Both of them worked non-stop until it was time for Lindsay to end her shift. Danny still had one more hour left and Lindsay said that she would meet him at the apartment. She promised to pick up his favorite Chinese. When no one was looking, she gave him a small peck on the cheek and made her way to the elevator and gave him a wink. Then she was gone.
But something happened on the way home. The walls that were built up to protect him from his impending emotions started to break away. One brick at a time, the wall came down till there was nothing left between him and the front door.
He opened the door and saw the food on the kitchen table and saw that Lindsay had already changed her clothes and was wearing a tank top and some yoga pants.
He never cried in front of a woman before but when Lindsay finally caught sight of him, he lost control. She pulled him to the couch and gently held him. He didn't have to speak, she knew the answer.
The food was forgotten as she held his hand and led him to the bathroom. She cut on the shower and led him into the shower with her. Thoughts of sex were not on the minds of these two. They both held onto each other as Danny cried on her shoulder. She reached up and placed her hands on his face and kissed him as the hot water streamed down their backs.
What they both discovered is that being modest doesn't make you weak; it makes you stronger in the long run.
The end.
