This is a one shot I've had written forever. I'm digging through the vault and revising pieces. I don't own Digimon. I hope you enjoy this.
His eyes were stoic as he broke her heart.
"I just don't love you anymore. I'm sorry." But he wasn't sorry. His eyes told the story. Those cold, emotionless eyes.
She sat in the park that afternoon. It was raining. It's not as if she noticed. All she could comprehend was the pain her heart was enduring. Like a giant blade piercing it repeatedly.
Silent tears ran down her cheeks in a stream. They weren't really visible. But her bloodshot crimson eyes spoke volumes. He may have felt nothing, but she was drowning in a vast sea of emotion.
As she stared at the ground, a car pulled up. The door opened, then closed quickly. But she couldn't pull her eyes away. Until a warm hand took hers. A familiar voice whispered,
"Sora, come with me." She recognized that face. Those warm, chocolate brown eyes. It was Taichi, come to save her from her grief again. He opened the door to the car and helped her in.
As they began to move, she looked at him. His face was grave, and it was obvious he was upset by what he knew.
"Thank you," she managed to choke out. He took her hand in his again.
"I hate to say it, but I saw this coming. I didn't want it, I prayed it wouldn't with you. But he told me. And I certainly let him know how I feel about it." She was silent a while.
"Don't be mad at him. It's my fault." He pulled the car over to stop. Her eyes were shining with tears.
"There's no way this could be your fault. I've seen it before."
"No Tai, not this time. I pushed him away."
"But how?"
"I didn't want this to happen. I really did care for him. But more than anything, I feel terrible for hurting him." His confused expression persuaded her to continue. "He was my friend. I liked him a lot. But he could only love me so long without the feelings being returned."
"You mean you don't love him?"
"No Tai." She paused. "Because I'm in love with you."
The constriction of his chest was evident. He took a sharp breath, then slowly released it.
"But Sora. . . when?" Her tears were slowly drying and her face began to glow.
"I've loved you all along." She looked down and held his hands tightly. "So many times I've put myself through terrible relationships, I've hurt others because I knew something wasn't right. But I just never figured it out until I got with Matt." She looked back u
p at him. "I never knew you liked me Tai. I never even considered the possibility. You were my best friend. But when I started dating Matt, you began to change. I couldn't have known you so long and not have been able to point out your changing. And once I realized how you felt, I knew I couldn't stay with him. I made him want to break up with me. I broke his heart." More tears formed in the corners of her eyes.
"So now you feel bad?"
"Of course I do. He's a good friend, and he didn't deserve this. It's all my fault. He never should have trusted me. And now that I'm telling you all this, you'll want nothing to do with me. I'm so sorry." Sobbing caused her body to convulse. He grabbed her arms gently and forced her to look at him.
"Sora, I know you're sorry. It's not in your nature to be unkind. Give him a little while, he'll forgive you. I'm sure deep down he knows you didn't really want to hurt him. I'll admit you could have handled this better. But nothing you do could ever make me want to leave you alone. I thought we had been through enough for you to realize that." She looked at him momentarily, unsure of how to take his words.
"Does that mean . . .?"
"I love you with my entire heart. Nothing will change that." She wrapped her arms around him quickly, elated beyond words. It broke her heart to break Matt's. But as Tai held her, she knew a little pain would be best for them both.
