Heero entered the room, warily looking around. The crash had been too loud, and the laughing had been too... he didn't know. He didn't like it, whatever it was.
"Who's there?"
There were no lights. Ragged breathing that was not his own hung thickly in the air, interrupted occassionally by a sniffle or a small chuckle.
He reached out in the darkness for the light switch. A warm hand darted out of nothingness, grabbing his wrist. "DON'T."
"And why not? It's dark in here."
The hand let go, and calmly ripped the socket off the wall, rendering it useless. "Because."
Heero was silent, staring at the dim sparks where the socket had been.
"Well. Perfect Soldier. I--"
"I'm NOT the Perfect Soldier."
The voice was gruff, quiet, teeming with anger. He didn't recognize it. The hand felt like one he knew, but he didn't know whose hand it was.
A shuffle, and footsteps. "Ever think of ANYBODY ELSE?! Or just your MISSION?!"
It sounded like something Duo would say. "Duo, I--"
"Oh, you're real smart. Glad you figured it out. Here, have a light!" A small flame shot up in the corner, showing a shadowy figure sitting against the wall with a shadowy braid trailing on the floor.
"So it is you."
"Maybe. Maybe NOT!" The voice grew hysterical on the last word, trailing off into cackles and broken sobs.
Heero stood uncomfortably, ready to run if he had to. The light went out.
"So." The voice was suddenly closer. "Do you love me, then?"
"I-- well-- yes, Duo..." He shuffled his feet. It was still hard to say it, and it was even harder when Duo no longer seemed to be sane. "I do..."
"GOOD." A hand cupped around his head, and he was yanked forward into a brutal kiss. Heero's eyes grew wider as he started to struggle.
"You're not-- Duo, you're--"
"No, you're right." Heero felt the braid wrap around his shoulders. He was too afraid, too confused, too bewildered to wonder about that. "So you realized."
"You're--"
The braid suddenly closed in to wrap around Heero's neck. It tightened, forcing a choking sound out of Heero.
"Yes?" Tighter.
"You--" A choked sob.
"Yes?" Tighter.
"You're--" Cut-off coughing.
"Yes?" Tighter.
"Why d--"
Heero's head slumped to the side. His eyes rolled back in his head.
The braid was removed from his neck, and his body was kicked to the ground.
"There you go, dear." Voice quivering with tears and rapture. "That's all better. You can sleep now... I'll sing you a lullaby, darling, a lullaby, sweet child, a lullaby..."
There was no response.
He leaned down to scoop up the body, and he dumped it on a bed on the other side of the room. The lighter turned on again, to reveal a shadowy figure next to Heero's body.
"Hush, little babies, don't say a word..." he sang softly, laughing quietly, tears rolling down his cheeks.
Heero and Duo stared up lifelessly, the dim light from the small flame caressing their pale faces.
A scream erupted from his throat. He squelched it, and looked down tenderly, placing the severed braid over Duo's chest. "There you go."
Trowa smirked, still crying. "Sweet dreams..."
