Prologue

"Why, aren't you a little young to be here?"

16 year old Maia turned her head. Her arrogance flowing from head to toe. She did not like it when she visited the New Mexico Institute. All the mundanes were so dumb and stupid. They always said she was too little to be in night clubs. She hated it. But it must be done, for the Clave forced her to. And if she wanted to be an adult Shadow Hunter this was the easiest way.

"No, I'm not to young, and back off because you do not want to mess with me."

"How old are you? Eh. You don't look more than 15. And whatcha gonna hurt me with, no weapons are allowed in the club." The man taunted. He didn't look more than 17.

"Oh really?" Maia took a glowing blade out of her pocket; a seraph blade. She always brought one with her in times of need. Like right now.

The man looked scared and flinched away. But then he realized that he was a man and much bigger than Maia, possibly stronger too. "You can't hit me with that. Little girls like you don't have the heart."

Just as he had finished saying that, Maia took the seraph blade and cut his torso away from his body. The man screamed in agony then was silenced forever.

"Oh and by the way, I'm 16."

There was no response. Not that Maia expected one, the dead don't talk. Especially the mundies.

"Excuse me ma'am." said a deep man's voice.

Maia turned around. Standing before her was the Pandemonium security guard. He was a medium-sized buffed up man, with a massive chest that his arms folded across easily. His arms were sleeved in swirly marks of permanent ink. They were tattoos that Maia was not at all comfortable with. As for his head, it was small and it was shaved clean off, not a speck of hair to be seen. He wore a black shirt and matching pants and shoes. The shirt said PANDEMONIUM in big white letters. His skin was a honey brown which made his dark brown eyes look black. He was definitely a sight to be seen and a sight that Maia saw all to often. She was a trouble with the Pandemonium guards, but hey who cares. She had back-up.

"Yes?" Maia asked as sweetly as she possibly could. She hated being sweet almost as much as she hated not killing demons. And that was something. Shadow Hunting was Maia's life. It was pretty much all she did.

"We have a visitor's report saying that you were seen with a weapon in the club and evidently killed a man about your age."

Now that Maia looked more closely, she saw a man about the size of Maia herself hovering behind the guard. She gave him the death stare. He looked like a nerd and easy bait.

"Oh, you mean this?" Maia took out a glow stick from her pocket. She always brought one with her when she took out her seraph blades to kill an annoying mundane. "It's just a glow stick. Completely harmless." Maia continued in her sweet voice.

The Pandemonium guard raised an eyebrow at her. It was obvious he didn't believe her. The guard raised his fingers and snapped an unusual and complex pattern.

It all seemed a little odd to Maia. That a Pandemonium security guard would be snapping at her. Maia never seemed to care about mundane snapping patterns, it wasn't anywhere in her studies about mundanes.

Right when Maia was about to question why the guard was snapping, a small hand closed around my mouth. When Maia adverted my eyes to the hand, she saw that it was a pale purple. A Faerie.
