Operation Annihilate

Jim Kirk had walked into his cabin alone. The door shut behind him. He sighed deeply as he slowly collapsed. He leaned his head against the door and shut his eyes tight. What had happened had finally sunk in. His brother was dead. There was nothing he could do about it.

He forced his eyes open and made his way farther into his room. He felt like nothing. He only felt pain. His brother (and his wife), joined Jim's father as the list of the dead for his immediate family. Jim felt alone.

As his eyes blinked the tears away, memories of the past filled his mind. When Jim and Sam were kids, they were hardly ever apart. They were brothers through and through. When their father died, they comforted each other. Now there was no one to comfort him.

A few moments later, Jim swore he heard a knock on his door. Whether it was a hallucination or not, Jim turned his head toward it. He braced himself, and shook away the tears. After all, his was still captain of this ship. He needed to look like one.

"Come in," He muttered, a little bitter after the events of the day. The door opened with a whoosh as someone came in the room. Jim saw that it was Bones. Jim looked away and sighed. At least it's only him, Jim thought.

The doctor slowly came in, and stopped as he got closer to Jim. When Jim caught eye contact with him, Bones opened his mouth as if to say something, but forgot. Jim looked down at the floor. Dr. McCoy put a comforting hand on the captain's shoulder.

"Jim, I'm so sorry," The doctor managed to say. Jim couldn't think of what to say, so he just nodded his head. McCoy then sat close to Kirk on the other side of the bed.

"Your nephew's waking up," The doctor said, trying to cheer him up. Jim looked at the doctor with a little hope in his eyes.

"Is he alright?" Jim asked as he felt a lump in his throat. McCoy nodded his head.

"He's alright Jim," He replied. Jim gave a soft smile.

"You can let go," The doctor said. Jim gazed at him for a moment, at a loss for words.

"Oh Bones…" The captain said, almost crying. Bones embraced him, and held him. Jim wept.
