The sky was dark. Rain pummeled the ocean, causing awkward ripples as the waves smashed against the breakers. I frowned as the rain picked up. My friend and I had only planned on spending the day by the water as it was a pleasant day, but about an hour after we arrived, the sky darkened and the rain started coming.
The low roar of the thunder made its ominous presence on the horizon.
"Come on, let's go," I said, lifting my arms up over my head.
His frown was deeper than mine. This trip was in honor of us returning from camp where we'd spent our summer. It was only 3 weeks until we returned to that place called school, and we weren't looking forward to it.
I had never gone camping before, but it grew on me like a thorn in the side. We spent our nights in tents in his backyard, creating a little fire-pit in the middle, and raising our tents up on strange, self-built decks when it rained.
"Do you want the tents to get wet, Alex?" I asked, glaring at him.
"No," Alex said, resigned. He took one last look at the ocean and then slowly started walking to his bike. "It's going to be slippery."
I gave Alex a funny look. "Slippery? Alex…it's not-"
I looked at the road, it was, in fact, covered in a shiny liquid, clear and running the full length.
"A car didn't go by, did it?" I asked, returning my gaze to Alex. He shook his head.
"I guess we're just…walking then."
Alex nodded, and off we were on our long walk back home. At the rate we would be going, our tents would be flooded.
Before the ocean was out of sight, I looked over my shoulder and I could've sworn I saw a flash of green light
