She wishes he would stop staring at her like that—like he's silently accusing her of something.

Sure, she'd come on a little strong in the past, but she was over that. It was pretty clear by now that Jake Green only had eyes for one woman and that was Emily.

It wasn't easy dealing with it, being Emily's best friend and all, and stuck in a small town which she couldn't escape without risking her life, but she was dealing with it. She'd tried to be polite to Jake and yet keep her distance to make it easier for all of them.

But when Eric had mentioned that Jake had found a couple of cars outside of town that might work with a little attention from a mechanic she'd eagerly signed on. They needed trucks after all, and there was really no reason that she and Jake couldn't deal with each other in a group with other people for a few days.

Unfortunately the other people were needed elsewhere at the last minute. She'd been thrown by the idea of being alone with Jake at first, but she'd gotten over it. So she spent a few days with Jake, she liked his company, and if she could get over the awkwardness then there was no reason that he couldn't.

Except it appeared he couldn't since he'd been glaring at her pretty much since the moment they left, annoyed the two times she stopped for a water break and then walking so fast she finally told him if he didn't slow down she was going to shot him in the back.

Now they stopped for the night and the temperature had suddenly dropped leading Heather to zip their sleeping bags together.

"What are you doing?" Jake asked her.

"I'm keeping us from freezing. Its getting cold and you can't keep the fire burning. It's not safe if there are people moving by. We're going to need body warmth if we want to avoid pneumonia."

He grumbled under his breath, but since he said nothing else she took that as an agreement. She finished putting the bags together and got in, waiting for him to get in and zip it up.

He took his damn time getting over to her and even then he kept moving in the bag, trying to get away from her, which was literally impossibly to do.

"Oh will you quit it," she finally yelled.

"What is your problem?" he yelled back.

"What is my problem? What is your problem? You're nasty, you're sullen, you won't talk to me and now you're treating me as if I have the plague. I get that this is awkward, but I'm not going to jump you here. You're with Emily; I'm over it, so why won't you get over it?"

He didn't answer her, but he stopped struggling and finally settled down.

She was almost asleep when he spoke again.

"I'm not with Emily."

"What?" she asked, genuinely not sure she heard him correctly, and her eyes fluttering as she tries to wake herself up.

"I'm not with Emily. That's not why I've been acting….strange around you."

"Then why?" she asked, now fully awake, "What did I do?"

"You left, I thought you died Heather, I…" he trailed off. She turned to her side, wanting to see him. Her hand landed on his chest as she tried to settle in, he put his own hand over it as he turned his head towards her, "I…you came back and I didn't know how to tell you…how much I missed you. How much I wanted you."

Heather didn't know what to say, but she couldn't help but smile at his words. He smiled back at her. She leaned in towards him, but stopped just short of his lips. This time she needed him to make that final move.

He didn't move at first and she held her breath, worrying that she'd gone too far, when suddenly he reached out, pulling her body to his and kissing her.

She had no idea what was going to happen, but she knew that, just like the last one, a kiss with Jake Green was bound to change her life.
