"It's so crazy. A few months ago I was in the South Pole practicing for my firebending test, and now I'm in the middle of an all-out war," Korra said to Mako as she sat against her furry best friend. Naga, curious as to what her master was talking about, tilted her head towards the couple.
"I know. We didn't even know each other then. And now, I can't imagine my life without you in it," Mako replied. His eyes were trained on the Avatar's shocked face as he continued.
"You're the most loyal, brave, and selfless person I've ever known."
She smiled sadly and said with a heavy heart, "I think you're pretty incredible too. But, you already knew that."
An awkward silence hangs between them for a moment. All Korra could think about was how tired she was. How frustrated she felt when she saw Asami and Mako together. How broken she felt when she heard Bolin describe when Lin Beifong broke her friends out of prison. How lost she had felt when he said quickly, "As soon as Asami came through the door, she and Mako immediately kissed. It was totally awkward for me because I was…"
Mako looked at the troubled Avatar through his peripheral vision.
She might as well give up now, what's the point in having an impossible unrequited love? Korra stood up hastily and began to walk away.
Surprised by her actions, Mako hastened up to walk side-by-side with her.
"Korra, I.."
"Save it. Right now we have to fight a big evil dude and relationships aren't my main priority and I just-"
He cuts her off by abruptly stopping in front of her. A shadow is cast over his eyes as he looks downwards.
"I broke up with Asami."
