Analysis
"Was it better to fetch Piggy's glasses, or would the ship have gone? Or if the climbed on, supposing the fire was all out, and they had to watch Piggy crawling nearer and the ship sinking under the horizon? Balance on a high peak of need, agonized by indecision, Ralph cried out" (Golding, 67).
A bunch of boys are stuck on an island. In the beginning of the book, they all already have established their roles o the island. They chose Ralph (fair boy) as the leader. Since Jack wanted to be the leader, he decided to be the leader of the hunters and help maintain the fire. The fire was very important because it was their only way home. Throughout the Beginning, Jack is so focused on trying to catch the wild pig. I think the reason behind his obsession is because he's trying to establish dominance; thinking that if he catches the pig, he will be better than Ralph. Jack was angry and furious that the boys didn't choose him to be the leader. Like dogs, they mark their territory because it feels dominance and a need to establish dominance if another dog is there. Jack is like that because he's trying to be better than Ralph.
Piggy's glasses are important because they need it to help them survive; they need his glasses to make a fire for the signal, to cook things, and to warm their selves. But Piggy isn't respected much because they just see him as a fat boy with asthma. Throughout the beginning you can already see power struggle between Jack and Ralph.
Point of View: Ralph
I took a stick and drew dragged it a yard or so. I yelled, "This is my side and that is your side!" Jack did the same thing. I was furious with him. Jack is always jealous of me. I rant to the vintage car and took the diluted gasoline and poured it over the line. I pushed Piggy, Simon, Sam, Eric and half of the pig to my side. Jack yelled, "Hey! Give me back my pig! I caught it!"
"Well too bad! I can do whatever I want!"
"Who said so?"
"Your actions did! You nasty.. lazy.. mean.." Piggy tried to cut me off but I told him to "Shut up."
He was running towards my side. I quickly took Piggy's glasses and lit the gasoline. Jack quickly stopped. Dammit I should have pushed some of the hunters to my side. I guess I'll just have to manage. The boys sat by the water and threw rocks into it. It took me a while to build three tents but I finished.
A couple of days had gone by. I was hungry. I didn't want to live off of berries. I looked over at Jacks side. They had a couple of pork pieces left. I saw Jack mumble something to his boys. They quickly got up and walked towards the forest. I jumped out of my seat and walked over to Jack's side. When I grabbed the Pork, Jack's and his boys turned around. Uh oh. I yelled at my boys to get ready. Jack's boys started running towards us. Hey grabbed our blueberries and cups of saltwater. Roger attacked and punched Sam down. Eric kept hitting Roger to get off his brother. I saw Maurice eyeing Piggy. Dumb Piggy ran the other way but was caught by Maurice. Maurice threw cups of salt water at Piggy's face and knocked Piggy's glasses off. Jack pushed me down and hit me. He said " Stealer!" I pushed Jack over and punched him a bunch of time. I called him a Selfish rat. We tackled each other a bit. I said, "You're so selfish and Weak!"
"Well at least I caught a pig unlike you!"
I punched him, "Um.? How many days did it take you to catch a pig? Huh? You're not better than me!"
We punched and punched until we got tired. I was so furious with Jack. That selfish bastard.
