Roxas is sitting alone in the cafeteria. He's a loner, and he's used to being alone. The kids in the school calls him 'weirdo', 'freak', 'sociopath'. But Roxas is Roxas, and he doesn't really care about what others think about him. He knows he isn't much of a talker. He avoids people to avoid talking altogether.

He picks up his lunch in hands and stares. He hates cheese sandwich. And lettuce protruding out at odd angles from the whole-grained bread. Pushing his tray away, he runs his fingers through his hair, careful not to mess up his spikes. He hears some female students giggle at him, pointing fingers.

There's something about being an introvert that gets to girls. Maybe.

He digs into his pocket and realizes he's run out of munny. He's about to go back to the classroom to take it when he looks up to see someone plopping his lunch tray by his side, and it's Hayner, the student from his class.

And he doesn't even ask if he's allowed to sit here.

Roxas stares at him.

Hayner busies himself with placing three cheese sandwiches properly in order on his tray, before he looks up at Roxas as if seeing him for the first time, and grins widely (Ouch, Roxas thinks quietly). "Hey, haven't seen you around before--mfft," he munches into his sandwich.

Roxas bites slowly into his cheese sandwich. Argh. Yuck.

"What? You don't seem to like cheese." Hayner makes a face. Roxas nods. "How can anybody NOT like cheese?"

"I don't know. I hate cheese." Roxas is surprised. He's actually conversing normally with an acquaintance from school.

"You're weird." Hayner munches. Cheese bits fall out from his mouth.

"I know." Roxas shrugs. If Hayner's going to be like the rest and call him freakish names and--

"--Here. Take my ham sandwich if cheese stinks for you." Roxas looks up to see Hayner grinning down at him. Hayner rubs his nose. "Ma made it for me. It's supposed to be kept for tea break--"

"But you'll have nothing to eat later--"

"What? I hate ham. You're doing me a favor if you finish this up for me."

"You hate ham?" Roxas can't help but offer a small grin back at Hayner's. "You're weird." He manages a small jibe. Somehow, it's around Hayner's friendly presence that he feels it's okay and alright to open up.

"Well, that makes two of us." Hayner finishes up his first cheese sandwich.

"Two of us, huh." Roxas pokes at his fresh ham sandwich Hayner's pushed to his tray.

He unwraps the sandwich, and takes his first bite into it.

He stops mid-way and looks up to see Hayner offering him a warm hand.

"Name's Hayner. What's yours?"

Roxas doesn't offer his back. He doesn't have the habit of shaking hands.

"Roxas."

"Roxas..." Hayner stares at his empty hand. Then he breaks out into a grin, and punches Roxas lightly in the arm. "Hey, and I thought I was the only who hated shaking hands when making friends!"

Friends, huh.

Roxas smiles into his ham sandwich.
