Author's Note:
I felt bad for their mum, so this is a Yuzuha-centric drabble. Not sure if it was done, but there isn't anything under her name. Random thought of mine. Set before Hikaru dyes his hair.
I don't own Ouran or the characters.
Admittedly, Yuzuha Hitachiin had never paid the amount of attention that she should have to her two sons. Regrettably business kept her away from them often.
When they were little and she had been home, they begged her to play their game and guess which was which.
She went along with it, purely to make them happy. Sometimes she guessed right, but as they grew older, they began to realise she couldn't tell them apart and hadn't ever been able to.
When she saw the distance growing between her sons and the rest of the world, she took it upon herself to ask them to play the game and let her guess. And she tried to get it right.
It was ironic, she thought, that the only time she could really tell them apart, was when she didn't get it right.
When she pointed to Hikaru and guessed Kaoru, he slumped ever so slightly, narrowing his eyes a little more so than his brother's. But if she pointed to Kaoru and guessed Hikaru, the corner of his mouth would twitch upwards and he shrugged ever so slightly.
There were tiny, subtle differences.
She came to realise that Hikaru felt only pain and disappointment when she didn't get it right, while Kaoru seemed to feel optimistic that she was still trying, that she hadn't given up.
Regardless, she knew that the best chance she had of choosing who was Hikaru and who was Kaoru; was only after she had chosen wrong.
