The Line
She walked away. She turned her back on him and walked away. She knew that she was leaving him heartbroken behind her, but what he didn't know was that she was walking away heartbroken too.
Tears welled up in her eyes as she walked away, but she refused to let them fall.
She had drawn a line with him that she swore she wouldn't let herself cross. A line about emotional involvement with and attachment to him. She'd walked that line for a while now, and then she'd begun tip-toeing carefully along it.
But secretly, she'd let herself step right over it too.
She'd crossed it. More than once. And every time she did, she promised herself that she was back on the right side of the line—the emotionally detached side—and that she was going to stay there. She promised she wouldn't step over it again.
She'd told herself that lie so many times she'd started believing it.
His words had harshly snapped her back to reality and showed her that she had been lying to herself. She knew then that she'd let herself go too far.
So she turned and she walked away with tears in her eyes, because she knew she hadn't just stepped over the line. She'd stayed over it.
