Sand

Chase blinked at Cameron's retreating back. He hadn't expected that. He hadn't expected her to walk away so quickly. Instead, he'd hoped and expected that she would protest to what he said, argue with him some, and eventually give in.

Because he thought it was really what she wanted too, underneath her detached exterior.

Obviously, he'd read this situation terribly wrong. It was too soon for him to push like this. She wasn't ready.

Exasperated, Chase pushed his hands through his blond hair and mentally kicked himself over and over for being so stupid.

Now he'd spooked her and screwed up this entire situation. She was gone. When he tried to hold on tighter, she'd slipped through his fingers just like sand. Pretty much any chance he'd had with her was gone.

He'd lost her altogether.

Sighing deeply, he closed his eyes and mentally kicked himself again.

He could've held on to her and whatever the hell it was that they had, if only he'd kept his grip loose and his big mouth shut. But instead, he'd tightened his hand and opened his mouth, and she slipped right through his fingers.

Just like sand.
