Captain Hector Barbossa whistled mindlessly as he strolled down the streets of Tortuga to the marketplace. He was in a very good mood right now. He was the new captain of the fastest ship in the world, the Black Pearl, and he had just led his crew to finding a large treasure.
A good portion of that treasure- his share- was hidden in a pouch under his coat.
His monkey chattered in his ear as he eyed the people around him. It wouldn't do for any of them to try to rob him, which they would if they realized how much money he was carrying.
He slowed down once he reached the marketplace. "So, what do ye think, lad?" he asked the monkey. "Aside from the fact tha' I still need t' find ye a name. Should I go t' the fruit stand first, or t' the artificer's?"
The monkey screeched.
Hector didn't flinch. He'd grown used to the monkey over the past few months. Even if he hadn't figured out what to call him.
"The artificer's it is," he declared. He headed down the street to one of the few permanent shops in Tortuga. He needed a new spyglass. Most of Sparrow's navigational instruments were fine, as the crew had never seen the former captain use them. So Hector knew that he could use them without being associated with Sparrow in their minds. But Sparrow's spyglass needed to go.
Barbossa glanced behind him. One of his crewmen was already talking about how they shouldn't have left Sparrow on that island. He didn't need others talking about it. The best way to do that was to get rid of every piece of equipment that was associated with Sparrow.
The spyglass would be the first to go.
Hector entered the artificer's shop and looked around. As usual, the shop was filled with the instruments a sailor needed. The shopkeeper looked up.
"I've need of a spyglass," Hector said.
The shopkeeper smiled and nodded. "I have a fine selection," he said. He directed Hector to the area the spyglasses rested.
Hector looked them all over, but his gaze kept returning to one of the larger ones, a handsome one with a wood casing, well made and almost new. "I'm surprised to see such a new one here," he muttered. He knew that the majority of navigational instruments to be found in Tortuga were from ships pirates had plundered. This one might also have come from such a ship, but it was in such good shape, Hector knew it hadn't been in use for long.
It even had a silken case.
Hector turned to the shopkeeper. After a quick bargain, Hector walked out of the ship, less one of the gold coins, and plus the spyglass.
"Let's find someone who might be selling apples, shall we?" he said.
The monkey chattered happily.
