Monica Reyes was eager to get home and get showered. She'd been on the road for three days with her partner John Doggett, and driving through New Mexico wasn't exactly high on her list of favourite things to do, and it wasn't even worth it. It had turned out to be a hoax. The language Doggett had used had amused Monica very much.
She quickly made her way up the steps and let herself in to the apartment building. Then up to the apartment itself. Reaching into her jacket pocket for the keys, she looked at the door which was open ajar. "Wha..." she whispered reaching out to touch the door, but immediately stopping herself. "Damn." The realisation dawned on her fast. "It's been broken into."
"I can see that."
Monica almost jumped out her skin and reached for her weapon, turning and looking into the eyes of Brad Follmer, she remembered to breathe and paid attention back to the door. "Yeah," she started then looked back to Follmer. "What are you doing here, Brad?"
"Heard you were back in town and wanted to see you, see how you doing."
"Well not good," Monica commented as she pushed the door lightly to see what damage was done and what had been taken. Follmer followed her in.
"Have they taken much?"
Monica did a quick survey. "Doesn't look like it," she narrowed her eyes as she turned around in a circle, "I don't understand, Brad." She pointed over to her desk, her laptop was still in the place she left it three days ago.
"These guys obviously aren't very good at their job," Follmer said coming to her side and resting a arm on her shoulder to keep her calm. "They probably got disturbed."
"Perhaps..." her eyes wandered and her face went blank.
Follmer saw this, "What?"
Monica walked over to the cabinet, the middle of it, completely empty. "My hi-fi system," Monica uttered and turned back to him. "They took my hi-fi system."
"You have insurance on it right."
"Yes but that's besides the point, my favourite CD was in there," she put her hands on her hips in clear fustration. Follmer fought to keep the grin off his face, Monica looked up to him. None too successfully it appeared.
"Brad it is not funny."
"Sorry Monica," he let out a strangled chuckle. "It's just a CD."
"Not it's not," She spat out her words. "Just a CD." She gave a pained look back to where the hi-fi system was no more, "It was a special edition one. I had been looking for three years to find it." She threw her hands up in the air in disbelief.
"I'll call the cops and tell them about the break-in," Follmer offered in a serious tone, "Report the stolen hi fi and that getting the CD back is their number one priority." This time, the smile and amusement had returned.
She threw a glare back to Follmer, "It's not funny."
"I'm sorry," he regained his composure, "It's just the fact you're more upset about the CD than the actual equipment itself." He shook his head slowly and gazed at her, "You invest your emotions in some strange things, Monica Reyes." Follmer smiled what he hoped was a charming smile, "I'll give you that."
Monica smiled slightly, "I invest them in you, don't I?"
"That's my girl," Follmer said with a wink.
