How can I define a friendship

That lasts throughout the years

It is a loving comforting sure grip

Made of laughter and of tears.

Our differences were clear to see

In oh so many obvious ways

And while we often did disagree

We got through every maze.

I speak of you in present tense

Which others think most odd

Yet you would have a defense

Of life's endless esplanade.

Others remind me that you died

Yet they are so totally unaware

That you are always at my side

For I sense that you are there.

It is illogical and yet so human

To want to hold onto that one

So special and one whom in

Times of doubt would not shun.

I stand alone now, gazing into space

Having been jolted as though we are apart

I hear you say "Jim, I'm in the right place

Where I am a memory store in you heart."

When asked to define our special friendship

I say I hope that they find the very same

One who in times of need and real hardship

Did not need to be called they just came.
