CHAPTER 1

Neku woke up with a start. He looked around; he was in a hospital, not knowing how he got there. Thirty seconds later a nurse walked in the room. She began fiddling with the machines then started measuring Neku's vital signs. When everything checked out normal, the nurse stared at him, slightly puzzled. Neku stared back even more puzzled than the nurse. Before Neku could ask any questions, the nurse left the room in a hurry. When the nurse came back she was accompanied by a doctor. He turned and whispered something to her, and she quietly left the room, closing the door behind her. The doctor tapped his pen to his clipboard. The only other sounds were coming from the machine measuring Neku's heart rate.

The doctor looked at his papers before finally speaking. "Mr. Sakuraba is it?" Neku nodded slightly. "I'm sure you're curious as to why you are waking up in a hospital." Without waiting for a response the doctor continued. "Allow me to explain. You see, three weeks ago you were found and severely wounded in the Udagawa Back Streets. Witnesses say they heard gunshots in the distance, but when they arrived at the scene no one was there except you lying on the street looking very dead with a gunshot wound to your head. An ambulance was called and you arrived here within fifteen minutes. A few doctors operated quickly to remove the bullet from your skull. At the time of operation however, most doctors thought you were dead as you had no pulse, but your father insisted you be put on life support on the small chance you were in fact still alive somehow. This is why we're a bit shocked to see you here alive. Jackie –the nurse has called your father, and he is on his way. I'm going to get you some water I'll be right back."

Once the doctor left the room Neku began to collect his thoughts. Three weeks ago? That's when I started playing the Reaper's Game .But I was in a coma, so does that mean the whole thing was happening in my head? It saddened Neku to think like that. It had to have been real, I feel like an entirely new person, and what about my friends, where are they? Neku's thoughts were interrupted by the doctor as he returned with a glass of water.

The doctor handed the glass of water to Neku and said, "I'll give you some alone time, you seem like you have quite a bit on your mind." With that the doctor stepped out of the room once more, and Neku began thinking again.
