AN: For my Modern Literature class we read One Hundred Years of Solitude by Gabriel Garcia Marquez. The genre of this book is Magical Realism so we had an assignment to write a short story in that genre about something mundane, in my case I chose skating. This is it. I hope you like it :D if anyone reads it, that is.

She stares across the blacktop; an endless abyss of darkness waiting to engulf her. She puts one foot on the blacktop then the other. Seven seconds pass then she glides forward with her right foot and the left soon follows. She advances steadily, leaving a trail of sparks in her wake.

The smell of rain and mud surround her adding coolness to the seventy-eight degree evening. She twirls and slides, watching the world around her transform from a dull elementary playground to a paradise of evergreen trees, colorful flowers, and the sound of bluebirds chirping. She glides forward ten times, feeling the cool, humid air hitting her face like a caress from angels. The wheels under her feet, a majestic purple, pound on the floor with every step causing an echo to resonate through the trees. The floor undulates below her and cracks as small flowers peek out to catch a glimpse of the world. She looks up to where far away, beyond the mountains, the sun sets. It is ringed by a bright orange followed by a swirl of purple, pink, and blue; a direct representation of heaven on earth. Calm, peaceful, bright.

She turns away at 163 degrees as too much beauty can damage a soul. She continues to glide. Above, a group of birds fly across, flapping their wings at the same rhythm as she skates. They make a star shape and fly in and out, making it look like it's expanding and then shrinking.

Finally, thirteen minutes and twenty-seven seconds later, the last traces of the sun's lights fade away enveloping the world in total darkness and silence. She slows down as she comes to the edge of the blacktop. She lingers for seven seconds then puts one foot on the grass and then the other. Slowly and quietly she walks away as the world behind her disappears.
