Chapter 1: Light

He died to redeem mankind, to save us from our sins, because he loves us. He was mocked, scorned, and tortured; reduced to naught but a criminal. And yet, he persisted, grabbing on to his dream with reckless abandon. He could not fail. He would not fail. Because there was more than just his life at stake…the world was dying. It needed to change; it needed him.

Kira.

His dark sepia eyes were glazed over in pain as he lay, half scrawled, upon a flight of stairs. Beneath him, Raito could hear the distant pounding of footsteps and furious commands. Sweat lined his brow as he desperately forced his bloodied body to move, to climb the remaining steps up towards salvation.

"Ryuk…help me."

The distant sound of cackling rang in his ears as the Shinigami landed next to him. He forced his vision to focus, staring into a pair of familiar blank, dead orbs. Raito watched on, helpless, as Ryuk shook his head in refusal, a vicious smile on his face.

"You know the rules," Ryuk stated; his voice devoid of emotion. "You lost, Raito." He shifted his wings, a hint of uncertainty entering his posture. "I told you I'd write your name down in the end."

"I know." Raito closed his eyes, allowing the pain to overcome his overwrought nerves. There was a short silence before the young genius spoke. "I just…" he whispered, voice breaking at the end. "I just want to see the sun again, Ryuk. One last time."

The Shinigami stared emotionlessly at the broken figure before him.

"Help me up these stairs," he pleaded, sepia eyes were filled with a strange light. "Kill me at the top; I don't care. But please…don't let me stay here." Raito continued crawling up desperately, clawing at the railings when his body failed to obey.

He didn't want to die here…on the steps.

If he were to die, Raito wanted to complete his journey. He wanted to ascend the steps of heaven…not lost midway. Mu. He didn't want to be devoured by nothingness; he didn't want to be…

"Please Ryuk."

Suddenly the Shinigami released a hoarse booming chuckle that sent a shiver down Raito's spine. "Alright," he stated, deciding to do one last favor for his favorite human. "If you want to die up there, then I won't stop you. But once your reach the top…" Ryuk's eyes glowed at this point. "…your life is mine for the taking."

His mind repeated the thought, as he slowly ascended. Raito's vision was blurred as he climbed higher and higher. Blood trailed down his shirt, leaving a faint sticky trail on the steps. Each drop of crimson marked the dirty, vile steps – cleansing it, bit by bit.

Perhaps he was becoming delusional.

He didn't know why struggled so hard till the end; he didn't know why he didn't allow himself to simply lie down and die. Raito's breath came out in pained gasps and he accidentally scrapped his wound against the edge of the steps.

He was a fighter.

He always did what was right, just.

Raito's breath hitched as his hand finally reached the top of the staircase; he forcefully dragged what was left of his pitiful remains upwards, he fell backwards onto hard cement floor. A faint smile emerged on his face as he stared deeply at a ray of light dancing tantalizingly above him.

"Goodbye, Ryuk."

And then his heart began speeding up…and then, he blacked out.

Minutes later, the SPK and NPA found his prone, lifeless body lying eagle spread on the highest floor. What surprised them was the faint, content smile they saw on Raito's lips. The first genuine smile they'd ever been graced with…

And it, like everything Kira stood for, was beautiful.
