The clock tower rang seven as the last of the setting sun peeked into Minerva McGonagall's bedchamber. She squinted as light hit her square in the eyes. She took another swig out of the fire whisky bottle and grimaced as it burned its way down her throat. She finished the bottle and tossed it in the pile that had accumulated near her bed that day. Through her hazy sight Minerva looked around her neat room. At least the house-elves had clean while she was asleep. Minerva pulled herself up so she was sitting up straight, but paused when the room spun. She sighed a rested her head on the headboard behind her. A few letters sat on her side table; they were get well cards and what not from students. Others had been left on the sill from the owls that had not been lucky enough to arrive when she had been sober or awake to take them, so they had chewed through tie and left them there. No one had seen her since the week before, most had assumed she was sick. Filius had bee up twice to see her but she had sent him packing when in a drunken rage hurled the half empty fire whisky bottle she had been drinking at him, and once and only once had the house elf Dobby visited her.
A slight knock on her door announced the arrival of Hogwarts's headmaster, Albus Dumbledore. He made his way over to her bad side and sat down. He surveyed the unkempt woman in front of him. Her hair was tumbling over her shoulders, her night clothes hadn't been changed in days and the room was beginning to smell from the bottles
"Good evening Minerva" he said quietly. She didn't turn her head but sighed as an acknowledgement. "And what may I ask has brought upon this change in behavior?"
"I need -hic- a holiday once and a while" she said, crossing her arms over her chest; her words slightly slurred.
"Minerva you haven't been to class in a week"
"And from what I hear the -hic- students are glad."
"Nonsense" he said as a loud noise issued from the hallway.
"If I'm not mistaken that would be the Weasley twins…again" She turned her head to face Dumbledore. "They don't need me..." she hick-upped and tears started to stream down her face. "Oh Albus!" she cried.
"There, there Minerva. It will be alright" He reached over and patted her on the hand.
"No it -hic- won't be" Her face gleamed and she fell forward into Albus's shoulder. "I'm 67!" her cries muffled. Albus laughed.
"Is that all?" She pulled away and swayed indignantly.
"You don't understand! -hic- I'm 67. I don't have any -hic- children or family!" She paused to hick-up again. She swayed slightly "my last -hic- date was -hic- oh god! -hic- when I was -hic- 16 and it was with -hic- Tom Riddle. Tom -hic- bloody Riddle!" She fell backwards into the head board with a bang. "An' we all know how -hic- he turned out to be!"
"Minerva" Albus said firmly. This caused her to wipe her tears and look at him. "You do have a family. The students, the teachers, this hold castle is your family. Even the giant squid, but let's think of him as a crazy uncle." Minerva giggled. "You even told me. Every student that has walked out of those doors has been like a child to you" He stood up and set a small bottle on the table and turn to leave. "You may have all the time you need Minerva to...ah…recover, but remember I'm here if you need me." He winked and walked out of the room closing the door behind him. Minerva turned picked up the potion, looked it over drank it. The room cleared and her head stopped pounding.
"What wonderfully magical things Severus can come up with." She muttered to herself. Something caught her eye out the window and she turned her head. Red lights were cart-wheeling against the now dark sky spelling out 'F.W' and 'G.W'. She raced out of her room not caring she smelled strongly of booze. Fred and George Weasley sat laughing against the stone wall.
"TWENTY POINTS FROM GRYFFINDOR!"
