"Katniss!" I sceam as loud as I can, hoping she'll hear me. "Katniss!"
"Rue!" She calls back. Please, please hurry, I think. Please! "Rue! I'm coming!" My eyes look around outside of the net. No sign of her. My heart beats so hard I think it's going to burst out of my chest. Maybe she ditched you, a small little voice says in my head. Just like they usually do in the Hunger Games. No, Katniss would never do that. I trust her. "Rue!" Katniss appears at the edge of the clearing where I'm trapped. Then, I see another movement out of the corner of my eye. Marvel! Katniss runs over, and tries to free me. It's too late. Marvel throws the spear my way, and for a second we are all watching fly through the air. I stare at it hard, hoping, praying, that it will miss. It doesn't. It pierces skin and I look at it, my eyes widening. Trying to take in what just happened. Katniss shoots an arrow, killing Marvel instantly.
That's when it hits me. The pain. I gasp and double over, clutching my stomach. I can feel the life slowly draining out of me, fading away. "Are there more?" Katniss asks. "No," I whisper. "No." I think of my home, and the orchards. My family. My friends. The times when I would listen to the mockingjays singing. "Did you blow up the food?" I say. She looks at me with a faint smile. "Every bit."
"Don't go away." I tell her.
She reaches out and holds my hand tightly. "I'm not going anywhere."
"You have got to win," I say firmly.
Katniss swallows. "I will. For both of us."
I suck in some air. I'm suprised at how hard it is. A mockingjay sings. I look at Katniss. "Sing."
She takes a deep breath and begins.
"Deep in
the meadow, under the willow
A bed of grass, a soft green pillow
Lay down your head, and close your sleepy eyes
And when again they open, the sun will riseHere it's safe, here it's warm
Here the daisies guard you from every harm
Here your dreams are sweet and tomorrow brings them true
Here is the place where I love you.
I don't know this song, but it calms me. I close my eyes, not wanting to die with my eyes open. That's just creepy.
Deep in the meadow, hidden far away
A cloak of leaves, a moonbeam ray
Forget your woes and let your troubles lay
And when again it's morning, they'll wash away
I exhale and think of my family. I will never really be able to say one final goodbye.
Here it's safe, here it's warm
Here the daisies guard you from every harm
Here your dreams are sweet and tomorrow brings them true
Here is the place where I love you.
