EPIPHANY

It never bothered him before - the knowledge that she was with another man. He knew long ago that she was waiting for her solider to return and sweep her off her feet. He, on the other hand, was just the roommate, somebody to share the rent. He was cool with that. It didn't bother either of them to live parallel, yet seemingly intersecting lives.
That was until Michael Gallant got out of the taxi cab. He was dressed in his full military regalia, but his primary focus was on her. His eyes roamed, ceaselessly searching for the woman whose existence sustained him during his Middle East tour. When she came running with her arms outstretch, he lit up like a beacon and heartily returned her welcome.

He watched from a distance, as she lowered her face and rested her head on the shoulder of the man next to her. He saw the way that she was caressed and how her lips curled up in response. It was partly a pout and partly a smile but to him, the sight was truly beautiful.
He managed to tear his eyes away as she looked up, only to have her lips captured in a kiss by the soldier that held her securely in his arms.

When asked much later, he wouldn't be able to identify the exact moment when he felt the abrupt lurch in his stomach or the sudden dryness in his throat. However, he would always look back at this point when he realized that he had fallen hard for Neela Ragostra.
Yet for him, the epiphany came to late, because after all, Neela had her man in uniform, and he, Ray Barnett was just the roommate.
