"They thought they were invincible," Lissa murmured, her voice unable to rise above a whisper, "And they were invincible. Until they weren't."
She paused, sucking in a shaky breath, grateful for Christian's warm, strong hand resting on her back. She didn't think she would be able to make it without him.
"Rose and Dimitri were my friends, my guardians, my family," she said, placing special emphasis on family, "Rose was the greatest friend, sister and protector anyone could hope to have."
Ignoring the fact that she was the Queen, Lissa swiped at her nose with her sleeve and took a gulping breath, "Rose and Dimitri dedicated their lives to protecting Christian, our kids and myself."
He voice broke off as she stared out at the other guardians in the room. Her eyes locked with Jill's watery ones, Eddie's stoic ones, Adrian's clouded ones, Sydney's red-rimmed ones, Abe's desperately broken ones.
"The only comfort I have right now, is the fact that Rose and Dimitri died together. Because I know, for as much as I will miss them both, if only one of them had died, the other would be completely lost."
She shrugged, a wavery half smile on her lips, "Rose and Dimitri were two parts of a whole. They loved each other like nothing else mattered. And I'll miss them for the rest of my life."
As soon as she finished talking, Lissa collapsed into Christian's arms. He held her close.
"I miss her so much," Lissa sobbed.
"I know," Christian looked out into the teary audience, "Oh, I know, Liss."
