Thanks to hawkstar2 for motivating me to actually write this. I was going to, and then I sort of got distracted and was reading Through Thick and Thin, and then I wasn't going to and then I thought: She managed to write 19 chapters and it's not done yet. I can manage a measly one-shot! So yeah, thanks.

Disclaimer: Strange coincidence, but just like everyone else, I don't own Maximum Ride. Everything belongs to James Patterson.

The Good Life

God it's great to get out. As much as I want to help Dr. Martinez – Mom – I can't help but feel confined when stuck in a conference room with suits. I know the best way to get the message across is to meet personally with as many suits as inhumanly possible, but I spend half the time holding my smart-ass comments in, and resisting the urge to just bust out of there. The other half I spend bored out of my mind. Though it's a helluva lot better than being back with the whitecoats in a lab, I'm glad today was the last day.

And a beautiful last day it is. We're only a few hours from sunset, but the sky is all clear, cloudless blueness, except for one small dot of Maxness. That, in case you didn't know, is me; all alone, soaring, spinning, rising lazily on thermals only to swoop at dizzying speeds. God, this is great!

I'm so busy enjoying the evening that I completely miss Fang's approach. The sun has begun its descent below the horizon, and everything – the ground, Fang, me – is bathed in pink and orange.

"Glad to be done?" He knows the answer, but asks because he knows I need to vent.

"Absolutely! They are so frickin' stupid! I mean, half still think I'm rabid and liable to attack them at any moment. The other half of them treat me like I'm 8 or 9 – and not us at that age, but like their naive little daughters!!!"

"Yeah," he agrees, "At any age, Flock can kick normal's ass." We crack up, thinking of Nudge or Gazzy versus any regular kid the same age.

"They seem to forget what were made of." Fang's ironic comment sets me off again.

"And what we've been through." That sobers us both up. We've been to hell and back, all of us... and more than once.

We continue flying in silence, thinking back on all the suffering.

"Fang?"

"Yes Max?"

... the silence stretches, waiting for someone to say something of great import....

"Race you home!"

Laughing, we turn and speed back towards our Flock, and the house that, because of them, is home.

AN: Just a one-shot to get me started here on FF. I know it's just fluff but if you liked it, or even if you don't, I'd really appreciate reviews!!! Please, this is my first fanfic. As well, did you know authors can see how many people have read their stories, even if you don't review??? So please, make me happy and review. Just one measly phrase, doesn't even have to be a full sentance!!! Come on, you know you have it in you!!!
