Shattered
Neville Longbottom sat staring into the fire in the Room of Requirement; the one place, it seemed where he could have a moment alone with his thoughts. He watched the fire dancing merrily as if it had all the answers to the questions now plaguing him.
Day after day he watched the famous Harry Potter, almost envying him. People never realized how similar they were. Both had lost parents, both raised friendless and alone, but unlike Harry, who had only memories, he knew his parents, and had to deal with seeing them like that; insane. Why? He always wondered. Why his life? Why are there some who have everything, then those like him who have had their lives shattered into nothing, shattered until no pieces were left with which to rebuild?
A knock sounded on the door. A girl entered, blond hair rippling down her back. She shut the door quietly, and walked over to the comfortable sofa Neville was sitting on.
Luna Lovegood sat down next to him, brow creasing at the sight of the pain in his eyes. She knew anyone watching would have laughed; a dotty Ravenclaw comforting an inept Gryffindor. But she didn't mind. She snuggled close to him, curling up on the sofa.
He smiled at the sight of her, so at ease with him. She was one of the few people who actually understood what he was going through, and he knew he would miss her when he graduated this year. She was the only one who understood how hard Professor Dumbledore's death had hit him; Dumbledore had been the only one who understood what it was like for Neville to grow up without his parents, always being compared to them, never being able to match the standard they had set. And now he was gone.
She watched him, his face grave with thought, and took his hand, causing him to look at her. "I know that whatever you are thinking about right now is painful for you, but you have to remember what we promised. Remember, last year, that we promised to stick together no matter what, to not dwell on past memories, but let them spur us on so that we can fight." Her dreamy face looked thoughtful. "And we promised that we would always fight together, whether we are fighting bad memories or You-Know-Who. And you also promised that you would help me hunt for Crumple-horned Snorkaks whenever this is done."
Neville smiled a little at this statement, and said only, "I know, and I will, no matter what."
Luna rested her head on his shoulder and they sat together until the fire was nearly out. She glanced at a clock on the wall, realizing the time, and rose to leave as he stopped her, grabbing her arm.
"Thank you," he whispered, before raising his lips to hers and kissing her softly.
