Sydney could not show himself to his friends. He could see them though. It pained his heart to see such pain they were suffering... pain that he could have easily abated before Darnay was put into the hellhole called La Force.
It's seemed helpless and it was obvious that things would not go well. The hurt would be only the beginning. He was worried about Lucie sure but that was the least of his concerns. Little Lucie so young... so innocent would have to learn to live in a world not familiar to her and one that was fearful. Who knew what hurt it could bring literally and metaphorically for this child.
"Mommy," Little Lucie asked, "When is daddy coming back?"
Lucie knelt down to her child and explained it to her gently.
"He can't come back darling," Lucie said, "He wants to but something is stopping him from coming back"
"But... when will that thing stop stopping him," she asked innocently.
"Come," Lucie said, "Ms. Pross made some cookies so lets go get some cookies"
Little Lucie went inside.
"There is nothing to do," the woodcutter said to Sydney.
"Nothing to be done," Sydney asked
"There is nothing to be done," the woodcutter repeated, "Nothing. The gentlemen will die"
